Miracle Mud - Starting a fuge

I have decided to try my luck with a hang-on fuge. I have some miracle mud that I was wanting to add to the base of the fuge. Can I just add this stuff without having to cycle it? I have never used it, and I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to cause any problems.

I had a video from them at the meeting last night but I can' find it at the moment. I may have left it at the Snitz house. I will ask around if you would be interested in watching it. I have and it shows the benefits and where to use it, But I don't remeber if it answers that question.

I have never herd anything negative on this mud.I know when premier first started they used it.You might give them a call and see how they liked it.

Scott (Premier) used Miracle Mud in the fuge of the reef system. We fought diatoms for several months after opening in that system, the Mud was on the short list of things we narrowed it down to. Other than that I've heard nothing but raving reviews of it. I plan on using it when I add mangroves to my fuge.

Thanks for the info guys...so it sounds like I may go through a period with diatoms. I wonder if the tank goes through a mini-cycle period and that is what causes the diatoms???

Just add it-- no issues for your tank. It's actually designed to be at least partially replaced every couple of years. I started my tank with it, and recently replaced the entire amount after the ice storm (what I'd had sat stagnant in sump for the 9 days, and I didn't trust it). No problems.

I started my current tank in September/October of '05 with the ecosystem/miracle mud sump and have NEVER had any significant algae issues (actually, the ONLY algae issue I've ever had in it is some on the back wall, where the flow is low)... and that's counting the most recent power outage (9 days), the microburst power outage (4 days), and a few other shorter outages. I definitely think the Miracle Mud is a great choice... add a good skimmer, some macro, and enjoy.

old thread.. I have had diatoms on the sand bed, not too serious, for about 6 months now since starting my tank. I used Miracle Mud since month 2. I can't be sure but I believe the miracle mud is the source of silicates!

My Spectrapure MaxCap RO/DI system reads 0 TDS out and I do bi-weekly 20% water changes. I have a PHOSBAN reactor w/ NPX pellets and I used Chemi-pure Elite for 4 months and the diatoms still stuck to the sand bed.

As of today, diatoms still live on my sand bed!

Remove the miracle mud, its main purpose is to feed macro algae with silicates but thst is also what nuisance algaes use too. Had the same problem you have and it went away after removing the mud

I will probably remove it soon and replace it with a SSB. How do I do a sand change without causing a problem?

Suck it out with a siphon and rinse the sand of dust when you add it and you should be fine
