Misc. questions thread

Hi friends.
I have a few small misc. questions (really??).
I'll list my questions first, and if any of you have small questions that aren't worth starting a thread over, feel free to post :)

1) I'm putting my new nano on a piece of antique furniture. I like the current finish and don't want the top ruined with salt water. My idea is to get a piece of glass cut to the exact size of the top as a shield. Any one tried this before? Does it work?

2) What kind of paint do I use to paint the back of my tank black??

There are more questions.... I just don't happen to remember them at the moment :wavehand:

The glass should work fine,... just make sure no water gets underneath as that will cause worse problems. Be careful when wiping the glass as well... water will wick underneath at the edges

any paint will work, roll on latex paint is nice and much more easily removed (at a later date) than spray paint

Lizz I used latex Black paint also. Rolled it on with a paint roller and used a small brush around the edges. Took about 3 coats to do my 180. Looked great and you couldn't see any streaks.

yeah, it will take more than one coat... but you'll have the same thing with spray, and the spray seems to drip/run more

I am not a fan of painting the back of the tank. I prefer to paint something else and attach it to the back. Some painters tape doubled over will hold a light piece of acrylic no problem and remain out of sight. plus you don't risk any mishaps. The other nice thing is that you turn the panel once dried so that the streaks are all away from the tank and it will appear perfectly even, no matter if there are globs, looking through the tank.

The only prob with this idea is that you will periodically have to take that off to wipe/clean the creep and streaks that inevitably find their way between the acrylic and the tank glass.

You may want to get those little rubber spacers to put between the piece of glass & the furniture. Should some water get on the piece you can always slide a paper towel in there to soak it up.

Only concern with this (in my mind anyway) would be that you'd no longer be distributing the weight over the entire surface of the glass, only on a few rubber supports. Also, the surface of furniture must be completely true or you risk cracking the aquarium at a high spot in the surace.:thumbdown

i just mean any accidental damage from moving the tank or accidentally painting something you didnt want painted (which shouldnt happen)

You know I woke up Saturday morning and finally had time to look at the used tank I just purchased and damnitall if it doesn't have paint spatter on the side glass. I'll have to try and post a picture, I think it would polish off with a glass scratch remover kit.
