Mixing Salt!

I have my 240 up and running...

I am now needing to mix in the salt. What is the best way to mix the salt up in this new tank? I hate to drain the tank and mix it 25 gallons at a time!

How does everyone mix their salt for a new aquarium?

Right now I have around 300 gallons of freshwater circulating thought my tank and sump at 79 degrees.

All suggestions appreciated!

thanx,

Jay

Yep, it's okay this time.
By the way, you need to take out some water for rocks and sand which displaces a considerable amount of water. I hate to waste a lot of good salt and RODI water.

Very good point. Not sure what you have available to mix water in, but maybe take out 30 or 40 gallons of water, mix the salt in the tank, then see where you are after you add rock. You can then mix salt in the buckets or use the water for top off. Your salinity is not that critical when you just have rock in the tank.
Good luck!

So do I just pour in the salt and let my pumps stir it up or just pour it in and let it dissolve?

I know when I do water changes in my 90 gallon, I mix up a 25 gallon brute and stir it up then let a powerhead finish mixing, but what's the best way to get it to dissolve in my tank?

thanx,

Jay

I'd probably just aim one of your returns at the bottom of the tank and slowly dump the salt in. Even if it piles up some, it will dissolve failrly quickly.

I'd add a third at a time leaving a several hour gap between each "dumping". Aeration is your key, I'd put every powerhead with a venturi that isn't being used elsewhere in there. With the airlines pulling in air from outside if possible. Then I'd dose Stability on the 4th day, add rock the next day, and go from there.

thanx, I added a 5 gallon bucket and a bag of salt over about 5 hours....that got my salinity up to about 1.020 or so. That is suppose to be about 210 gallons worth of salt.

I will probably keep adding salt until I reach 1.025 or 1.026 then I will siphon about 25 gallons out before I add sand and rocks. Then top off what ever it need to reach the right water level.

Probably use the rest of the saltwater to do a water change in my 90 gallon, since this weekend it is scheduled for one!

I started adding the plywood to the stand tonight and it is finally taking shape!!!! :-)

When should I put my skimmer in, when I start adding the rock?

thanx,

Jay

Sounds great!

Yeah, add the skimmer when you add the rock. Are you curing your own rock or buying pre-cured?

Most of it is coming out of my 90 gallon and the rest I have in a rubbermaid tub with a heater and powerhead. It's been in there for about 2 weeks.
