Mixing saltwater

I am in the middle of setting up my new tank...it is just about filled with ro/di water and i planned on mixing the salt in tank....should i dump it in the sump or in the tank..i was thinking about the sump and let the pump push it in the tank..any ideas or tips appreciated :D Kieth

That will be OK as far as the tank is empty of critters. My preference will be to dump it were there is higher flowy the sump.

No there isnt anything in the tank but sand along the outside edges of the tank...i will be putting the live rock i am receiving in tommorrow.

If you have sand, then dump the salt in the sump. The salt supplements initially undissolved can make the sand clump into a rock due to the initial high PH and precipitation.

Ok ty for the response ...i will mix it slowly in the sump near the pump.

that's what I did when I first set up my 75. Add the salt to the sump slowly and let it mix. You may want to add a few cups every 15 minutes over a few hours to make sure it dissolves better... I think I added 3 cups every 15 minutes when I did mine and it worked fine. I have the sand and rock (all dead) in the tank when I did this too.

well i did it last night and its been running all night with a few koralia 4 powerheads running in the tank as well....i just tested salinity and i got it pretty close at 1.021..so this method works farely well for those looking for a way to mix water for a new tank
