mixing tangs in tank

i know this seems to be a touchy subject but im new and want some opinions...i just bought a 96x30x30 with plenty of flow and filtration...want to mix a bunch of tangs in there with an achillies being the show fish...which tangs are the most tempermental that i could mix? also if i had a bunch of clowns could i have a larger fish like an angel? i know some of these fish get big but once they out grow my tank bass pro shop will buy them for their big display tank so that doesn't really concern me...thanks for the input

well first you have to decide if you want a fish only tank or a reef tank. Then you can start planning your fish after that. If you're doing a reef tank, angels tend to nip at corals. If you're going to do clowns I would recommend only a pair of them in a tank. You have a lot of choices in tangs. A few that I would stay away from are the clown tang and sohal tang.

sorry i could have included that, its a reef...upgraded my 150 to this one, so alredy have some livestock...few softies some lps and 4 clowns, an algae blenny, watchman goby and coral beauty angel

these are what i'm interested in some yellows, naso, blue hippo, achillies, whitecheek tang, powder brown, whitetail bristle tooth...

i know thats too many for the tank those are the fish that stand out to me

i had my other tank run very successfully for over a year, so i think i've got the hang of it..im still learning everyday but know the basics pretty well

So after a 'very successful' year, you do or don't know that an Achilles is difficult to keep?

I have 10 tangs in my 450g DT

Its not "touchy" unless you are an ignorant imbesile like a couple of other folks on here lately. I dont see a problem with any of those tangs that you listed. On the achilles... I didnt add one because of the difficulty issues and Ive been keeping marine tanks for 8 yrs now. Its your choice, but I would wait until you have more experience with running a huge tank with many tangs. You sound like a smart guy... you shouldnt have any problems.

Not a bad idea, I just don't want to add the other tangs then not be able to add the achilies later..I'm in no rush either I'm not fixing to just place a huge order online tomorrow or anything lol

The achilles is very aggressive towards other tangs so it shouldnt be a problem adding it later.

I pretty much have the same size tank as you and I added all of the following at once - 2 yellows (one large, one small), a purple, desjardini, achilles, powder blue, and hippo.

Here was the pecking order....zebrasomas - desjardini (alpha to all fish), small yellow, small purple, large yellow. The powder blue was alpha to the achilles. The PB would occasionally instigate trouble towards the achilles, the achilles would flare its fins and just swim away. The PB never inflicted damage to the achilles. The hippo at 6" and was just happy go lucky.

It only worked for 2 months because then I ran into ich troubles stemming from my hippo tang. I QT'd all my new fish except the existing ones (YT and hippo) and forgot the hippo had broken out with a mild case a couple of years prior (never treated at the time).

I'm freshwater now, and I plan on adding the following once the tank is ready: fowler's, achilles, desjardini, hippo and a purple or yellow (don't have either yet). I love PB tangs, but am hesitant to get another one. It seemed to work well the last time, but you never know with individual specimens. Having 8' really helps if the subordinate fish can just swim away.

just make sure you are running an ich-free DT if you do plan on adding an achilles/pbt. they're the two most ich-prone fish and an achilles arent one of those fish that will fight it off with good quality water and good feeding. once an achilles gets ich, it will spread to the rest of the tank-mates like wildfire.
