MJ mod workshop?

We have an awesome guest speaker lined up already for October. You wouldn't want to miss him :) Just a hint... his last name rhymes with LE, as in exotic propagated corals. Tentative topic is coral propagation. This man knows his stuff... should be killer! :D

Rich, Gresh, I'll deal with your MJ mods if you guys are not around.

How's Sept for everybody else? Matt? Since you asked first :)

The guy picking his nose:D
He may be young but he knows his MJ mods pretty well.

I would gladly help you guys out BUT.... I am actually in the process of getting ready to relocate my family (and myself) to Seattle in August. Not sure that there would be much free time between now and then. I will also most likely won't be around comes September.

It's actually rather simple to do really (the mod) especially if you get all the ready made parts from mjmods.com (pre-cut shrouds and centering caps).

As always though, if you need some help just shoot me a PM or email.

i'm down to set aside some time and learn with folks, count me in, either september or october is fine with me..

how to the bar diy workshops work? it would be great if we could have the parts available to be bought at the workshop like rich said earlier. would this include an mj or do we bring our own? any size preference in terms of standardizing the work and parts or does that matter?

September works.

How about picking up a few extra parts for Rich, Gresham, and future raffles? I'd be willing to put together some extras! ;)

Ok, tentative plan for a Sept DIY workshop. We'll get a head count for who attends and how many of what mod they want. We can get kits to go around. People can bring their own MJ, and if people need to buy MJ's as well, I'll get a count and see about doing a group buy through one of our sponsors.

D, can you give people an idea of what they might run on their tanks? Like in my case, I have a 72... and I'm thinking to run a couple modded MJ. Would a couple 1200 with the big prop be overkill? Better to go with the 900 and a smaller prop? I'd probably just run them continuously.

I have made a few of these and can help people. Let me know what tools you need. I think we could make the shrouds pretty easy.

For a 72g tank, you would be good with 2 MJ900's pushing Octura 1435 props. A MJ1200 spinning the larger 3004 Dumas (1.75") prop would be a bit much for that tank even if it's SPS dominated.

It also depends a lot on what you keep in your tank too.

Here are the props in terms of flow (from least to most) in my experience.

1.25" Dumas (good for mixed or LPS and softies tanks 55g and under)

1.25" Hobbico Nitro Hammer (good for mixed or LPS and softies tanks 75g and under)

1.38" Octura 1435 (good for mixed and SPS dominated tanks 90g and under. Might need some creative mounting for LPS and softies dominated tanks though)

1.75" 3004 Dumas (This is the king of flow IMO/IME. Excellent for larger SPS dominated tanks > 90g)

This is just a general guideline though as the flow requirements also depends a lot on specific tanks (custom dimension, substrate type, and whatnot)

Great idea folks, as much as it's nice getting all the great speakers (Thanks Norman :)), sometimes just some down to earth "this really will help me right now" information lectures are great also. Eitherway documentation should be put up on the BAR site as well, as great as the information that the great nosepicker posted was, it gets a little cluttered with 800 people saying THIS IS GREAT when you want to get the meat and bones to how it's made :)

Some suggestions, I noticed a miter saw being used to cut groves, if you do this, have a bunch of precut pipe read to go (maybe a 4 foot long section you can cut into smaller sizes as needed), regardless of club insurance matters having a saw slicing along a smooth round object for those who don't do a lot of cutting could end up leaving missing quite a few fingers. The drilling can be done on site though with cordless drills though.

Also as a demo, maybe get a tank setup with some water in it and compare how this things hold up to a SEIO 1500 and/or tunze stream.

If you're not comfortable working with a power saw, I would highly recommend buying the pre-cut shrouds and centering caps from mjmods.com

If you go to http://mjmods.com there is also a page dedicated to instruction on how to make these too. That might make it easier for you guys than wading through the looooong frigging thread.

Didn't know they finally put an "instructions" page together... nice :)

I bought setups for 4 mods from them then a chauvet for $36 for the "wavemaking" :)

Probably best if we make or buy parts in advance, so we can spend the time assembling and testing. Less clean up to do at ASAP. PVC chips are a pain to clean.

Probably easiest to order SS rod, end caps, and props, from MJMODS. I'm willing to make up shrouds for everybody in advance. No biggie for me to do that.

I'll do a head count and mod list later this evening. Probably waay late. Got a ton of tank work to do, plus still have to go to the gym.

If you have an idea of how many of what mod you want, please post here.

For myself, I'll do as D suggests with the 2 MJ900's and Octura 1435's. Thanks D!

Mike, yah I know what you mean. Well, gotta do a little bit of everything for peeps :)

A while back, some members were saying that they really wanted to have some educational lectures. Have a couple really good ones coming up. Glad we can have a DIY workshop too :)

I would want one of both of these:

1.38" Octura 1435 (good for mixed and SPS dominated tanks 90g and under. Might need some creative mounting for LPS and softies dominated tanks though)

1.75" 3004 Dumas (This is the king of flow IMO/IME. Excellent for larger SPS dominated tanks > 90g)

Well Norman I'm not saying I don't appreciate the lecturer parts of things, I mean the clams lecture? That was a great one for the clam folks, ditto for the Mantis shrimp one (although I'm not a keeper of one it was still a fun lecture), upcoming lectures? Good stuff to be sure. I just really like the hand's on stuff :)

Ok onto the meeting some things that need to be addressed
*BYIMJ? (Bring Your Own MaxiJet) probably would be best, not to mention it's a very common pump available at just about any LFS including the big chains. (perhaps a group buy? see cost below)
*If you want the club to get the items for you (along with special props like Rich mentioned)
*Cost of said items (perhaps a blanket $10-20 fee for the workshop? Whatever is closest to the cost of the items)
*Head count, can't just have people dropping in at the last moment expecting to get stuff done.

Btw I'm in for this. I'd probably want the beefier "for SPS" versions (MJ1200 + the prop Rich mentions)

I could bring a Tunze 6080 for comparison. I'm sure someone else could bring a Seio. The 6080 would be a good comparison because it is a non controlled one that sells for about $200 and has a flow rare of a little over 2000 gph. If anyone has a Seio 2600 they should try to bring it. That one pumps 2600 gph and costs $75 on MD. We could see what the 1200 MJ mod does next to these two.

I don't know if this is too many to order but I could handle like four of the 1200s and four of the 1.75" 900s. I know a lot of people with reefs and they would love to get them.

I definately suggest BYOMJ. Either ordered from MD or we could ask around to see if any sponsors could get a good deal on them. I'll call Manfred right now and let you guys know what he says.

If you guys can get a hold of John from Exotic Reefs, he has a bunch of the MJ1200 and MJ600 mods that you might be able to borrow for comparison? :D
