MJ Mod

Anyone seen or tried this out yet? I was looking through the forums and ran across this mod for MJ 900 or 1200. It turns them into a high flow pumps like a sieo. It boosts the MJ 1200 up to 2000 gph.

It looks like everything comes from R/C boat parts and PVC fittings to me, so probably can make them cheaper then buying the kit, but the kit is not priced too bad.

I'm planning on doing one, but using the 900 because of half the wattage of a 1200 and allegedly produces about 1600 gph.

Would someone like to demo a modification at the next meeting?

If you would like to do so, please PM me.

Thanks

Paul.

I believe nIx_tank is working on gathering parts from local stores to do this. I doubt it would be ready by the meeting, but it might be able to give us some insight on where to find these parts locally.

I am working on this. I just got a used MJ this past weekend, so I am going to start working on this. I know of one RC (Remote Control cars, planes, boats, etc.) shop, in which I know will have the parts I am looking for.

I could order the kit from Reef Chili, but I would prefer to locate the parts locally, so COMAS members can secure the parts easily.

Dependent upon my own free time, I could theorectically have it done by the time that the October meeting rolls around.

Do we have a date yet for when the Oct. meeting is to occur?

I was thinking that once I got this first one done, I would then work on another, and have it broken down via parts.

So at the meeting, I could show off all the steps to create one of these modded MJs, and then show how it all comes together.

The final part of the show though, will be placing a modded MJ along side a non-modded MJ to show flow differences. I was thinking that having two 10 gals filled with water (each with one MJ in it) and a little plastic confetti (To easily show flow rates) should do the trick.

As long as the modded MJ doesn't push the water straight out of the tank.... :D

Nick, if I make it to Tulsa in a timely fashion some time before the meeting, I'll check Wings n' Things. It's a RC hobby store that should have it, too. I can bring both of the 10g tanks and the unmodded MJ for you. I just need to clean out my "Aiptasia Culturing" tank ;) Let me know if you need a hand with working on this.

i was thinking, larger tank:

Mj unmod
Mj mod
Seio
Tunze

work out a cost/gallon flow
cost/year operation

Hmm, that would be a good idea. I would be curious to see how a modded MJ would compare to the Seio & Tunze.

that would be useful information.

I think the ecotech vortech pump is incredible, but it's a bit expensive.

I just finished doing this mod to one of my Maxi-Jet 1200's and I must say it is a lot more powerful than the standard Maxi-Jet 1200. Of course I don't have a Tunze or Seio product to compare it to, so I can't give a fair comparison to those products. However, the consensus on the boards seems to be it's about equal to the output of a Tunze 6060. That is yet to be seen. For what it's worth, I used the all parts from mjmods to make mine.

I saw on some thread that Tunze is going to have some new stream powerheads, after the
first of the year, that are more aimable and cheaper. The thread I saw lead to a website
which listed the price on the cheapest one at about 69.00.

The powerheads looked looked a little ball on some kind of swivle arm, If I remember right

Wish I could find that thread, I don't remember if it was reef central or reefs.org

i have 6060s I can bring

If I could take my big one (the 6200) off my tank I would bring that as well......but it would need more than a 10g. Even at 5 feet from the pump it will pile the sand up......and thats 2.5 lower than the pump.

Hey we have the MJ mod on our MJ200 works unbelievable we have one in the 90 gal plus a seio 2600 (or whatever their biggest is)
