MJ900 kit from MJmods

Well they sell the rod/tube in 1' lenghts, so that you will need to cut but that isn't difficult. The shrouds are all precut.

Performance isn't guaranteed. Some have a hard time getting it to start using a MJ900. Mine worked though.

How many did you use on your 72bf and where did you place them? Do you have any pics? R u happy with the flow you get out from MJ's? Do you know how much flow roughly they put out? What type of reef setup do you have (SPS, LPS etc...)? Should i go with standard MJ1200 mod kit? I might be setting up either 72BF or 90G setup which will be mainly LPS and Softy kind of setup.

lol...lets tackle those in order:

1 modded MJ900 on the right side wall, about 8-10 inches from the tank top. My tank is viewable from the left side and front (obviously). I went with the Octura 1435 prop which I'm told does about 1800gph in a broad range.

No pics yet

Happy with the flow but am afraid that adding a 2nd might be too much. right now I have one more MJ900 (not-modded) on the back wall in the upper left corner.

For a 72-90, I'm told 2 modded MJs would be great for a SPS dominated tank. For a 72, might be too much flow. For a 72g softie tank I think it will be too much flow. There is a smaller prop (Nitro Hammer I think) that might be more appropriate for a softie tank. I have a post at home where someone talks about tank size/prop size. I'll post tonight.

Right now I'm going with mostly softies with one or two sps as an experiment. Honestly the MJs are just in place until the Tunze nanostreams come out at the end of the year.

The MJ1200 will start easier in deep water (where mine is). When I start mine, I have to move it to the top for it to kick in them move it back down. Easy enough since I glued mine to a magnet.

FWIW: I recently did 2 MJ1200 mods. In addition to the parts, I had to drill (3/8" hole in the shroud for the prop stopper), cut plastic rod, cut stainless steel shaft, experiment on prop placement, and superglue. The hardest part of experimenting on proper placement of the prop so that it would hit the stop if started in the wrong direction, but not rub against it when spinning the right direction. I ordered 1 kit plus an extra shroud, center cap & prop. I was able to start one, experiement & screw up & still have enough plastic rod & stainless steel rod to complete the 2 MJ1200s. hth

Oh, one more thing: it's a DIY project, so the only guarantee is if you do it & succeed, you'll feel pretty good about it :)

I agree w/MJ on the flow...I've actually heard about 2000 gph from a modded MJ1200. I can say compared to my Seio 1100's, my simple hand in front of the PH test does conclude the modded MJ1200 puts out more flow than the Seio 1100.

Thanks, it's very helpful. I think i will stick with one MJ900 mod for now :). Looking forward to pics of your tank :D

Good suggetions. i will also try to get one kit and extra stuff that you got, i might be able to mod two that way if i need to. Thanks

It also depends a lot on what you keep in your tank too.

Here are the props in terms of flow (from least to most) in my experience.

1.25" Dumas (good for mixed or LPS and softies tanks 55g and under)

1.25" Hobbico Nitro Hammer (good for mixed or LPS and softies tanks 75g and under)

1.38" Octura 1435 (good for mixed and SPS dominated tanks 90g and under. Might need some creative mounting for LPS and softies dominated tanks though)

1.75" 3004 Dumas (This is the king of flow IMO/IME. Excellent for larger SPS dominated tanks > 90g)

This is just a general guideline though as the flow requirements also depends a lot on specific tanks (custom dimension, substrate type, and whatnot)

should be noted that the two smaller props need to be drilled out. Its easy but you need to have a series of small bits to do it right . I like to use bits specifically made for plastic.

if you do get the kits get the deluxe and youll have about a 100% success rate on the 900
