Mod recomendations needed!

So I have taken my (roughly) 5 gal HOB fuge and converted it into a settling tank (that only means there is nothing in it). I've added a sponge on the output to catch other gunk as well.

I have since added another mod to the fuge. I hung a pump and piped it to another inlet I added to the fuge. This I use when cleaning the sand with a siphon. Problem is I am eating up impellers with my sugar fine sand. Anyone have an idea on fixing this issue? I have added filter floss to the siphon but that kills the water flow and I have to restart it time and again. I've used a fine mesh media bag on the end but that is too coarse and lets the sand through. I've done both and it still let the stuff through. So now I'm thinking about a filter sock concept, that won't let anything through-right? I wonder what it will do to my flow though.....? Only problem with the filter sock is that the settling tank kinda becomes obsolete. It is in itself a filter, I'd rather not have another filter. So how to I make some sort of trap for the sand? I bulk-head concept at the opening of the siphon that stops the sand from being sucked it? I'm thinking that no matter how careful it will still get in. Some sort of a trap like what is on our sinks? That way maybe the heavy stuff will get trapped in there-maybe. IS there a pump that can handle sugar-fine sand?

Any ideas are appreciated-I am getting frustrated with this problem!

Sorry guys, I can't upload pics for some reason (probably because of my archaic OS). If you respond with your email I will send them to you! The pics are of the HOB not of the siphon or anything-we all know what a siphon looks like right?

Another question....I have been thinking about making an attachment for the end of the siphon, something with a hose on it that can get into nooks and crannies....flexable. Like the top of the siphon only hooked to the bottom and removable.

there is really no pump to do this that i am aware of. However if you have a Large capacity air pump you could Create a air uplift sand siphon cleaner. Put a small hole in the water line connected to your cleaning wand. Run a air line in there and down into the cleaner wand thing. as the air is drawn up the tube so will water and the dirt. its less powerful then a pump but better then you would think...

I Have bare bottom Reef tank and use a magnum 350 to clean the sand that settles on the glass with .50 micron filter pad in the canister
