Modifying a GFO Reactor to Run Carbon as Well

So I have no sump, so everything is hang on. I wanted to run carbon and filter floss as well as GFO. I thought about modifying my Two Little Fishies 550 by ordering spare parts and making a two chamber reactor. It would be as follows from top to bottom:

550 Sponge
Plastic Divider___
Filter Floss
Carbon
Filter Floss
550 Sponge
Divider_____
Space
GFO
Sponge
Divider

Here's a pic.

Thoughts? Improvements?

Be careful with the filter floss as it clogs the flow rate will decrease causing the GFO to stop tumbling and it may solidify as a result.

Brs has a video about GFO. If you mix the carbon and GFO you can pack the media in instead of having to have the GFO tumble. The carbon keeps it from melding together.

I packed my TLF reactor this way.

+1 to CarrieB. I also mix my gfo and carbon, I do a scoop of carbon then a scoop of gfo and continue that until the total of each it added

Ran my BRS mini reactor in this manner on my nano tank. Works great and the GFO doesn't clump up. The only downside is you use more carbon, as the GFO gets used up before the carbon does, but carbon is cheap.

Huh. Good to know. I have read many post is here saying not to mix them. Interesting to hear success stories. Thank you.

I still may build this thing. I'm kind of liking the look of it.
