I’ve been contemplating making some mods to my somewhat established (3 month old) 14g biocube and I’d been interested to get thoughts experiences from you fine members of RC as this will be my first DIY effort.
First, going chamber by chamber, I plan on removing the false bottom from chamber 1 and putting my heater in there. I’ve also been thinking of putting some live rock rubble in there but I’m not sure how that will work with the heater. I also plan increasing the size of the notch between the first and the second chamber to increase the flow.
In the second chamber, I plan on removing the bioballs and the drip tray, stripping off the vinyl on the back, and filling it half full with live rock, and the rest with chaeto, and then putting a light on the back like this:

to create a mini refugium.
In the third chamber, I plan on swapping out the stock pump for a Rio 6HF (350gph I think) and then swapping out the stock return jet for a t-joint with two lock-lines coming off it for better flow. I’m curious about putting the heater in the third chamber as well (I’ve seen people mention it in other posts) but I would think the water level wouldn’t be sufficient. Also, I’m wondering how much I will need to cut-out of the notch between the 1st and 2nd chambers in order to feed the new pump.
So that’s what I’m thinking. I would love to hear your thoughts.
