Mollies for Algae control

Here's an interesting thread in Reef discussion right now: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=965490&perpage=25&pagenumber=1

To sum it up, apparently mollies are great for eating all kinds of different types of algae, including red slime. I know Jack has been doing this for a while now, but in case any of you missed it I thought I'd toss the link up on the board :) I'm thinking about getting one tonight if Andy's Animals has any. Anyone else keep a molly or two in their tank?

Clark had some last time I was there. Won't someof the fish get big enough to consider the mollies fish food?

How long is the acclimation process? Normally being brackish or freshwater usually... how hard is it to get them going on salt?

If you get them as freshwater, drip acclimate them for a few hours and toss them in. One thing to note they breed much better in full salt so they are a help with feeding the tank. :D

I have been wanting to do this for years, had no clue they would help with algae, that is a bigger bonus.

got two days off so time to try this out i'm gonna try a male and 2 females just in case anemone gets one, all those little fry could be free food

I'm surprised you cannot put FW beta's in SW, They breath Air, and can live in the nastiest water.

i acclimated a freshwater flounder which is brackish to saltwater i have a couple left in my tank now been in there for a year now

had 10 of them but i had a big sand sifter starfish that i think caught them since they hide in sand, now i got 2 left

brackish i'm sure can be changed over, i had a brackish fish tank for a couple of years with green scats, mono sebae, mono argentinas, different puffers, freshwater lion fish, mooray eel.

Picked up a couple of nce bright orange mollies today and are acclimating them now....These actually kinda resemble anthias- If they do well and tear into algea like they say they do, it'll be kinda neat to have them in there....

One thing to note...these are not reef fish and have no clue of the dangers of a reef...this is good if you intend on letting your anemone snack on them...mollies will go right up to an anemone and get caught all the time. This is how I feed them to my anemone..I do nothing and let the molly commit suicide. I keep a few in the sump as well where it is safer and let them breed.

Heh- I guess we'll see how these go then. What kind of anemone do you have? I have a large H Crispa and other fish bump into it all the time with no ill affect. I'll be interested in seeing how these take....

For added weirdness in my tanks....the clowns decided to host in a mat of zoa's...it is stinging the crap (the black spots) out of the male but undaunted he is still there and the female joins him frequently although she isn't getting stung as badly.

Weird- my HC isn't sticky at all....That might have something to do with fish being able so brush against it without getting hurt.

some anenome sting alot and strong from what i've read i think bta are one of least harmful to fish but i do have a purple tip sebae anenome that i'm not sure about.
