I have a plenum and like it just fine. I have a lot of rock and it spreads the weight out evently across the tank. I also have a deep sand bed. I try to get as close to reality as possible and I wanted the the deep sand bed for organisms and plants to root and hide in. I used a under gravel filterations system on my plenum for 5 months. My understanding is that you should do this if you have or are using a plenum.

How can you have a plenum and deep sand bed at the same time? Do you mean on different tanks?

No... I used the plenum like an under gravel filter. I loaded an inch of large gravel on top and then another 1.5 inches of sand on that. The gravel and the screen on the plenum are enough to prevent the sand from just filling in the plenum. I read you should not do a deep sand bed without a plenum underneath. So when I started my reef tank thats what I did. The worms and what not move back and forth easily and I started the plenum off with flow underneath for 5 months.
