monti eating nudi's

is there a fish that eats these things.......

they are the hardest thing to get rid of...
i have a frag that i pull out and dip (i dip in coral rx and iodine)
and they are good for a month, then there they are again.

i even got a tooth brush and scrubbed the entire coral on bottom (not mounted to a frag plug) and ****ed the coral off and didnt even care if i killed the coral as long as i got rid of them. and they are back....

i dont want to get rid of the coral, because i like it, but im to that point.
or is there a dip that i havent tried yet???
a fish that likes them.. anything....

your problem is more then likely the eggs, the dips can kill the nudis themselves but does not kill the eggs, people usually take all the montis out treat them in a qt tank for a few months to rid the problem they are tough to get rid of, coris wrasse and six line is your best bet for fish to help but to win you must kill the nudis and kill the eggs with them or you more then likely will be fighting this for a loonnggg time

Yep, they are breeding in your tank. Your best bet is to set up a QT tank and move the corals over to that and continue to treat and inspect until you've gotten all of the eggs, juvies and adults.

Do the eggs reproduce under the coral or in sand/rock? That's why I was scrubbing them to try and remove any eggs or anything I could find...
But I guess they will be coming out today.
Do the wrass eat the nudi's. I have never had to deal with any other bug, and hope to not in the future

Wrasse will eat them but not exterminate them to do that you need to rid the eggs they will lay them In crevices under the coral or in your rocks . Qt tank is your best bet

I am pretty sure that our tank is AEFW free now because of the dips I used. I would dip all acros in Revive once every three weeks, and inspect for eggs while dipping. You have to keep dipping every couple of weeks to interupt the life cycle of the FW. I know you are talking about MEN but it is the same principle (dips won't kill the eggs).

QT and weekly dips, here we come.
I had a local reefer give me a 6line that's not liking his cube, so maybe he can handle anything leftover during QT.
Here goes nothing

Potassium Permanganate was what I finally used to knock them out. It did a number on my montis but all of the frags I tried to save made it.

This is what I used as well, it melts the eggs. It is also very hard on the corals and can be hard to get as well. Good Luck!

Can you elaborate on what type of chemical this is, and what its commonly used for.

That way I can look into getting some.

Also, can you elaborate on the process. How much water, how much chemical and how long of a dip.
Thanks!!

KMnO4 is a very strong oxidizing chemical. It basically reacts with all things organic and destroys them. I think by using this dip you are counting on the fact that the coral will recover and regrow but the nudis are toast. I would think you could get some by making friends with a chemist, or maybe a pool store since it might be used for water treatment. No idea on dip concentration though. It is mean stuff, so I would guess you would want fairly dilute. Good luck!

just a question for you pro's

i know some people dip their plugs or the base of their corals in H2O3 (hydrogen peroxide)
will it kill the algae, and nudi's? or maybe the eggs to?
just curious.
(havent had much time to search for the potasium)

will the wrasse just keep them at bay or eradicate them....
its not that i dont want to see them, but i want them gone and dont want to be that person that spreads them to others.....

This would be my concern as well. I never saw nudi's until I moved my monti's to a tank without a wrasse. I never saw them, but they were still there.

Or they were present in the new tank before you added your montis, just a possibility.

IME a good wrasse will essentially eradicate them. I may, or may not still have monti eating nudis but I haven't seen a single one since adding a yellow coris wrasse to my tank.

I've kept a yellow coris in the last 3 tanks I've had (including my current tank) for the sole purpose of not having to worry about monti eating nudis.

This is an excellent point!! Very responsible of wanting absolute erradication to keep from spreading to other reefers. The Wrasse maybe be good for getting the population down and then you could chemically treat them to finish off what is left.

Except that all of the rock and corals came from the old tank, the only new thing added was the sand.
