Monti Nudibranchs

I recently discovered that I have monti eating Nudibranchs. Who else has had an infestation and won the battle? What did you do to beat them? Also, will they attack acro's too?

Ending up tossing the infected ones out and quarinting the rest for several weeks. I still have a majority of them in quarintine. They will not attack acro's since nudi's are specialized eaters.

Good luck, they suck!

Pretty much same thing here. Threw out 5 corals and HEAVILLY fragged several others. I think they are still hanging around in my tank though as one of the frags is still receeding.

They're a pain. I used regular [weekly or twice a week] Iodine dips, inspection/scrubbing/egg-removal + blasting off nudis after ... to save what I could.

I talk a bit about my experience on these two threads:

They're a pain. For heavily infested specimens [esp with areas you cannot inspect/remove eggs from] ... I'd frag the tips, toss the base :( For larger/hardier ones egg-removal and dips w/ baster/powerhead `blowing them off' seemed to manage.

I lost quite a few Montis, I'd play it as safe as you can.

ok.. I have them.. I have a digi i watched disappear today. only get frags and inspect very carefully and still got them. a little ****ed that fellow reefers are the only place i get my frags from.

what do the eggs look like?? what threads have the best advice?

I put a coris wrasse in and I did notice him eating some....but I don't think he will be enough to wipe them out. Man what a bummer seeing them in my system. Monti's are my favorite and I have lots of them in my tank.......figures.

I lost alot of nice montis to these over recent months. I used tweezers to remove them when I saw them, freshwater dips for about 1 minute, iodine, etc. The best cure is to physically remove any you see each day, remove their eggs, do freshwater dips followed by freshwater dips 10 days later to remove any new hatchlings. It sucks. Like I said, I lost some nice pieces.

ok... I read all the threads fron to back. seems like if you get them your screwed. according to well respected reefers dips dont kill them. we dont know the life cycle. leaving the tank w/o monti's isnt necessarily going to kill them. fragging and tossing is the only way to "HOPEFULLY" get rid of them.

IME, dips will kill the adults. [or stun them enough so they can be easily blasted off in the dip]
It's the eggs that are a problem.

Are you able to remove the monti's from your tank? Do you have a quarantine tank? Do you have a farm and fleet in your area?

I pulled out a few of my affected monti's and scrubbed the areas where i saw the nudi's with a toothbrish. any that where hiding in crevices i took a toothpick and killed the little buggers!

so far they have not come back.! that was about a year ago

I identified the nudis. Just havent gotten a good shot of the eggs. i know what to look for as far as the damage and the bugs themselves. just not the eggs. I am in the process of doing the qt tank set up as we speak... as far as the farm and fleet, is that to get levisamole?

If you know that you have them...then plan on Q'ting them for at least 3 weeks.

1st - You are going to have to treat for 5-6 hours then change "ALL" of the water to fresh salt water. Examine the coral for egg sacks. If you see them, try to scrap off with toothpick.

2nd - find out what the life cycle is for the eggs. (I think 5 - 7 days)

3rd- then treat a second time. (est. 5-7 days after the first treatment)

4th - After the second treatment for at least 5 hours then change "ALL" of the water to fresh salt water again. I would monitor for the next week then possibly do a third treatment. If you think the coral can handle another treatment that soon.

(Levimisole hydrochloride) (sp) 50ml per 10 gallons of saltwater.

I use a Wal-Mart 10 gallon set-up for Q-Ting all coral before they go into our tank.

Hope this helps!

I don't have any pics of the eggs, but they were in large clusters on the underside of a monti cap I had. They were whiteish to clear, if I remember correctl and about the size of a bb or a bit smaller. You'll know them when you see them.

As for the FW dips, each dip lasted about 1 minute, and no it doesnlt kill the coral if the fw is the same temp and ph of the sw.
