I was told it was a monti but I'm wondering if it is some sort of cyphastrea.

I don’t believe so. I have some in another part of the display and this behaves nothing like it.

That's what I'm guessing too. Is there anything I can watch for as it grows to tell definitively?

Im fairly sure it's a cyphastrea. The way it looks in your picture its costae is showing unbroken lines/grooves
If it was a asteropora or stylocoeniella (other possibilities) the costae would be irregular and bumpy.
