i'm relatively new to the coral keeping thing and i'm concerned about a green montipora i picked up on the weekend. it is a shelf forming type and the inside parts of the ledges are white ( there are a few parts where another leaf over hangs it that is white as well ) i assumed that that was caused by the lack of light - but i'm concerned about the central portion where the leaves radiate from. there is a band about a quarter of an inch that is completely white - i was thinking that maybe it is a disease - should i be concerned? it hasn't gotten any bigger since i placed in my tank and the outer edges are nice and green, but looking at pics of it on the net i havent seen any others with white edging....
 
First they are not leaves, those are polyps...With out a pic it is hard to tell what is wrong...growth of SPS can be white in color, but it is a much different white then bleaching...So if you could get some pics that would be alot better...

does not look good...what I would do if frag off the pieces that look heathly and ditch the bad parts...You can also keep an eye on it and if it does not get any worse, then you have a chance of it receovering, but if it gets worse, time to frag it.
 
You can cut it or break it by hand as they tend to be brittle. Also, your Montis look like they have signs of Nudibranchs munching.....
 
If the white area is not spreading, you should leave it alone. If the white area is getting larger, frag off healthy pieces of the edge by pinching and breaking.
 
i dont have any nudi's in my tank that i know of, but i will watch to make sure none came with the coral. i might try to mark the coral somehow and try to keep an eye out for spreading. if it does get larger i will cut them off
 
NEPTUNE777 - you were right, i snuck down and took a look last night and found 4 nudi's having a party on it - would they have caused the bleaching? or do i have 2 separate issues? i removed them, and i will keep checking for more of them
 
they are eating the monti, that is what is causing the bleaching; whoever sold you the monti should give you your money back.
 
he's a 2 hour drive away, so it wouldnt be worth it. i also found a small aptasia on the underside of another coral i purchased from him. last time i go there thats for sure.
 
you can remove it and get some tropic marin pro coral cure. i used it on my nudi problem and it worked great. Only problem I see for you is it looks like some of those nooks and crannies may be hard to inspect for eggs which the TMPCC wont kill. they need to be removed

Dip the monti every week. Everytime you dip, brush the underside and white area with a toothbrush. Do this for 4-6 weeks and you should be fine. You also need to isolate it if you have other montis in the tank.
 
the eggs are usually very near the nudis. they are fairly large and in white bunches. CLKWRK started a great thread on pests and there are very good pics of nudis and eggs on pg 2 of the "pests" thread

This will work great as it worked for me and many others.

A toothpick is a great tool in this fight.
 
Can anyone posy a picture of what these nudis look like? Also, a picture of the eggs would be helpful too!
