moonlights

should you have your moonlights on all the time is it true that they burn out quicker if you don't have it on constantly?

Moonlights are not a requirement for the tank.I run mine on a timer to turn off when my halides turn off. They run for 1 hour with my actinics until it's just them.Alot of people don't use them at all.I love mine though, gives you a good view of what's going on after the sun sets!

For a bulb thats going to last several years anyways...i see no point to turn it off every day. I leave mine on all the time and never turn them off...they been running for over 3 months now.

Its up to you though...if you've got a spare timer, go for it...but personally i dont see the point.

I don't know if anyone else had this experience, but I had a little coral bleaching when I left my moonlights on all the time. I now have them come on when the halides shut down and shut down the moonlights around 1:00 a.m.

Thats weird...i've never heard of a little moonlight bleaching out anything in a tank...they're just too weak. Are you sure they bleached from the moonlight? I mean, there's waaaaayy too many things that can cause a coral to bleach...

I agree. Aren't moonlights 1 watt or something? I leave mine on 24 hours a day. Sometimes I will turn them off on a whim if I am not going to be looking at the tank, etc.

The moonlights on my 30" Orbit setup are your typical 5mm 3.6v variety that suck up only 20mA. I'd think a true 1-3W LED (Luxeon/Cree) would be waaaay too bright for a moonlight yet still not powerful enough to damage your tank.
