More of the same.

I didn't get that far into the thread to pull that out of it. I do see how that can be a big problem. So, essentially it's almost like the wholesaler selling directly (but in reality though the etailer) to the customer, which puts the LFS on a very uneven playing field.

Can the retail shops bypass the wholesalers at all by doing something like ordering directly though someplace like Island Marine Tropicals from the Kingdom of Tonga. I don't know if they do fish, but as far as corals go.

For the most part, yes they can. There are some exporters/collection stations that may have exclusive agreements with certain wholesalers, such as Chip Boyle in the Cook Islands and Quality Marine. The problem is that you are usually dealing with a higher order minimum, higher shipping cost, and a higher mortality rate. I have seen places that expect you to eat the first 10% of the DOA stock. So yes, it is possible, the problem is whether or not it is fiscally possible.

Hey Marc,

How does deep fried clown fish taste?

That's called transhipping my friend. Been happening since the beginning of time in our trade. Problem with that is, most stores can't buy enough volume to make it worth their while, and most can't meet the min order amount. Add on top of that the DOA/DAA and the items that you can't sell, and the price is just about if not more then buying from the wholesaler.

FWIW, transhipping is just as bad as drop shipping IMO for 90% of the LFS.

Not to mention, they either have to have a US F&W S permit to import, or, the exporter has to have a place they first send the stuff to stateside, then onto the LFS.

Oh, and yes, Jim ships fish from Tonga. Just coral wouldn't cut it in the export world ;)

I've really been wanting to get some of those fairy wrasses that you have been carrying, and hope that you get a bigger selection in so I can really bust loose with the tax return. I just wish I lived closer the Whineland so I could go window shopping.

Matt-

The bad thing is that the "Whineland" was an honest to God typo. I have tried multiple ways to apologize to Race for it, but none of their froums are allowing posts now, he has no PM or e-mail available with his profile. I was left with sending it to the mods asking them to forward it on my behalf.

They did the same thing in the other threads, it's just gone. As if it never happened, never existed in History. That reminds me, I need to go back and finish reading 1984.
