So I have a 20 long currently and was planning on going to a 40 breeder with a 20 sump and making it a DIY project. After visiting the LFS here in Burbank while I visit, I am looking alot more closely at the 170. I am curious about the sump though. It seems like besides having an ATO, adding water to the volume and offering a place to hide equipment it doesn't look like you can do much more down there. I would like to be able to add a small fuge and reactors. Are these things possible to add down there? Or are they even necessary in such a small tank? I currently have an HOB fuge on my 20 that has only 13 gallons of water and the seaweed in there is happy and doing its job as I'm watching my No3 stay in check and P04 is slowly lowering.

My 20 long is 13 gallons total and the HOB fuge is 1 gallon. I worded that wrong.

I really do like the look of the read sea rimless though. It's super clean and I already have all the equipment I'd need to run it besides reactors (if they're even able to be).

I think you can use your hob fuge on the Red Sea if that's what your asking. Then you have some room in the sump for your reactors. Also if no hob use the sump/fuge and hang the reactors

If I use the hob fuge I'd want it in the sump area not off the side of a gorgeous tank. What I'm asking is, is there room or a way to encorporate a fuge into the sump. I can always plumb reactors above the sump off the return that way they're out of the way kind of.

That's gonna be challenged putting a fuge on a tight minimal space. You can put a small Tupperware or a DYI fuge. Adding couple of reactors on the side of the sump without having to drill & hang. I think aqua maxx sells slim reactors that would fit between the sump & sidewall of stand.

The fuge I have is the finnex hob. It's pretty compact and I think it would fit in the area you're talking about between the the sump and stand. I should be able to fit a small reactor in there maybe too. I'm going to swing by that store again this afternoon and look at the sump a little more closely to see if this would work. The other option is to silicone a small area inside the skimmer section. I can't find the photo at the moment but a guy made an are for mud and cheato that was 23x25cm and was still able to set his RO110 in there.

After looking at the display at the store it looks like I could fit the finnex fuge and two reactors off the side of the sump. I am also toying the idea of building a shelf inside so I can up the size of the ATO from 1.6g to maybe 2.5 other more.
