Most Excellent Pics of Mantis Shrimps on the Web

THAT IS BY FAR THE BEST SITE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!! I WANT MORE MANTIS SHRIMP!!!!! I want to go to new guinea and collect my own!!

Several of the identifications are wrong and a couple of the animals look dead or at least knocked out. There are two species that I don't recognize, but most of the rest are what you would expect to see on a muck dive.

Muck dive? SOunds lovely!...Where do I sign up??? Does that require scuba? or are they relatively shallow water? Also, if you find a cool one, how do you collect it? I sure as hell not going to bare hand him! and I think the suction tubes wouldnt work or hurt it...

Actually, I often do use my bare hands to colect. MOst of the stomatopods in muck (loosely consolidated sand and mud high in organic content) burrow. For small species like Odontodactylus latirostris and O. cultrifer, Pseudodquilla, Busquilla and many of the smaller lysiosqullids, you can simply insert your finger in one entrance of the u-shaped burrow and push through until the animal pops out the other end. If you try to use a glove, often times you can't feel and follow the burrow. I will admit to using a glove for O. scylarus and some of the bigger spearers.
