Most underrated Tang?

I'm thinking of a tang I see on DD every once in a while but I can't remember the name? It is a darker body with lighter colored polkadots all over it. It requires a 300 gallon tank so it must be a bigger tang. Any know which one I'm talking about?

Was it an Acanthurus Maculiceps? They've offered a few of these from time to time. Very handsome fish and not outrageously priced.

I think the gemmatum tang is pretty but for the price is one of the most over rated tangs.

Most likely Zebrasoma gemmatum. While a 300 gallon tank would be great, I wouldn't consider it a necessity. Most Zebrasoma with the exception of the sailfins are on the small side for tangs. You probably got the 300 gallons confused with the $3000.00 price tag ;)

We get them locally, its only a matter of time before I catch one

:fun2:

I think there are 70+ in the species with only a hand-full garnering most of the attention but there are some less popular gems that I think deserve a little more respect. I'll start it out with the Kole Tang. Not exactly uncommon in the trade but non-the-less a less popular fish compared to the other species in the Tang family. My adult Kole has some remarkable markings and a deep rich blue/purple color with bright yellow markings around the eye and body. It is not very aggressive and to me it is more efficient a herbivore than any of the more popular Zebrasomas. What's your underrated tang?

ive got a kole tang too, awesome fish BUT it's starting to nip at my clam's...has anyone else experienced this with a kole or any other type?id hate to rid of him but the clams sure arent going...

there was someone here locally that had to get rid of a yellow cause it was nipping his clam's mantles.

My vote is for the lavendar tang (Acantharus nigrofuscus). It is subtly beautiful and, IME, a model reef citizen.

How about just your basic yellow tang. Cheap, easy to keep, great pets.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!

The question was which is the most underrated, and the yellow is taken for granted because it is common. They are beautiful.
If they were rare they would be held in high regard.

Great answer. I have tended to think the yellow was commonplace and boring. Seeing them schooling in Hawaii changed that. And having a yellow "coris" wrasse has made me appreciate having a solid yellow fish. Good call.

I dont think yellow tangs are under rated at all... everyone has one and everyone likes them. They are one of the most common fish kept by aquarists probably, once you get past clown fish.

Just because people dont think they are a super amazing rare fish doesnt make them under rated. imo :P
