mounting a duncan

so, i got this duncan frag off the internet. but it is not mounted and has been freshly cut off the mother colony. how do i mount this ? i'm not familiar with this coral at all and i'm totally unsure of how i should go about adhereing it to some live rock.

right now i have it wedged into a piece of rubble, but i'd like something more permanent so those stupid snails and crabs don't knock it off.

so , from what i've seen of frags of duncanopsammia axifuga ( whisker coral ) they have a hard tube like structure they grow through. kinda like a dendro or tubastrea. well, my frag doesn't have that tube structure. i think it was lopped off one of those structures. it was probably growing out the side of one, and whoever fragged it, dremel'd it off.

so, right now i have a fleshy disk of poly that is slimed over. any ideas?

i was thinking of keeping it in a really low flow area and trying to get it mounted much like you would a mushroom or something. with some lace or a panty hose or something? maybe even putting it in a cup to keep the snails away?

any ideas would be appreciated.

glue it to a frag plug and stick it in the sand till it starts growing. Just out of curiosity what color duncan have you got?

hmm...glue with some super gel? i was really worried that since it was so fleshy that the glue would kill it. i've never used the glue method before. any suggestions for the type of glue i can use ?

i've not seen it polyped out yet since i got it. but the pictures i saw of the mother colony were purple with green tipped sweeper tentacles.

locktite gel works good. I wouldnt drown the guy in it but a dab on the base or bottom I guess it would be should be just fine.

well, thanks for the input. hopefully i can get it mounted. what i'm afraid of, is that i got a bad frag of this duncan. because there is not really a base to it. it kinda has a hole . almost like a donut. so.. does that mean no mouth? it's like the top of the polyp was just chopped off and given to me. i've never seen a duncan frag, so i dont know if this is normal or not.

Can you post a pic?

I have three duncan frags. Two came mounted, one didn't. The one that didn't was easily glued to a frag plug, but it had hard skeleton under the polyp to work with. The two mounted frags also have skeleton underneath them as well.

so, this is the frag that i got. i forgot to mention that it seems cracked or something as well. the insides are showing!

I would find a small pc of rock rubble that it sits into nicely, then glue it into that. You will have more area touching and stablizing it until it grows.

IMO your frag is very small and improperly fragged too close to the polyp. I would try to glue the side to a frag plug, and let it heal up a bit in a lower flow area. I hope it makes it.

i agree.... IME even if the polyp is severely damaged, it can still come back and form a full, healthy polyp. Just be careful not to buy newly fragged polyps in future. when i sell mine, i always wait a minimum of a week to ship out, usually two or more. It is hardy stuff, so it should be fine.
