Mounting AI Sol Over Tank Without Hanging

So I am in the process of putting together a new build. I purchased an AI Sol because I got a great deal on it and it offers the perfect amount of coverage the tank. The problem is mounting it.

The tank sits on a desk in my dorm. I cannot hang it from the ceiling and I cannot attach anything to the desk. What options do I have for mounting this on or over the tank? I am trying to make it look halfway decent as well...my creativity is minimal.

You could build a canopy and have the light sit on it. You just won't be able to raise it up and down like you would if you could hang it.

I have this same problem. Led fixture is very close water line (2" over). So I'm thinking to buy a 12" mounting rails and put it on the top of 24" (I have one unit). I will be looks crazy but I will try - or someone has any idea to rise them higher - about 6" to 8" above water level.

I have legs from 24" but they're 3" tall, so if I put one more set light will be that 3" higher.
Are they making bigger legs for that rails?

It's kind of tough since those plastic edge rail can't be mounted onto each other. The only way I can see you hanging your light 6-8 inches from waters surface would be by making one of those hanging rails guys make out of some tubing from home depot. Besides that I really don't know how you'd achieve the distance you want, but I'm sure someone will chime in and give you a good idea.

The mounting neck does not fit the ai sol unfortunately...

As for the mounting kit provide...has anyone tried stacking 2 on top of each other to get more distance from the water line? It would look absurd but it might work. Or gluing multiple legs together?

I have seen others build fixtures to hang it off of out of pvc pip and I will do this if need be but I just feel like it looks so crappy.

If I was to build a stand for the tank does this open up possibilities to hang it from something attached to the stand? Does anyone have any ideas regarding this method?

Check out this thread. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=20167844 The radion guys are really creative with mounting and reilly13 has some pics of just what I'm describing here. I'd say your best bet is to bend conduit and attach it to your wall and or stand. Then you could hang them with some of AI's hanging rails or just attach them to the conduit themselves, given you have a drill.. I know you said your not that creative but its nothing you cant ask home depot to do for ya if you measure it out correctly and ask nicely :). Paint it black and it will look sleek...Other then that just get the hanging rails, drill into your dorm room ceiling and buy some spackle and paint for when your leave. lol..

It would be really nice if we could get thread started in which SOL owners show off heir hanging arrangements. Very little info out there on this topic.

Bump!! I am having this same issue right now. was thiking of putting a shelf on the wall with brackets, and mounting the fixture on the bottom of the shelf...but i need it to be about 12-15" from the wall and it will look kinda whack.
