Moving overflow

Before I knew of the external overflow, I purchased a tank with an internal. I'd really like the extra room inside, obviously. Can I cut out the glass and rebuild it externally, about half the size, cutting slots for the water to flow out of the tank?

Some pics to visualize:

Thanks!

Crap, I forgot the smiles: :D ;)

Removing the internal overflow is ez in a glass tank since it was sillicone together, however, I saw 3 holes already drilled so you have to cap them off. Also you don't need to drill new slot, a u tube will do just fine.

I'm going to use two holes for CL intake and return, so I'll only have to cap one. How possible is it for the U-tube to lose siphon and cause a catastrophic failure?

You need to drill a tiny hole in the u tube closer to the top to prevent this from happening.

I don't think I'm going with the U-tube as it violates a design objective. Plus, I'm drilling four other holes so another bit isn't going to kill me.
Thank you for confirming that what I have in mind is doable, and offering alternative solutions.
