im moving my tank about 15 miles. my question is would a new sand bed cause a mini cycle...if so, should i just rinse my old sand and put it back in?

If you keep your live rock wet then you should save the majority of your biological filtration system. Thus, no... a new sand bed would not cause a mini cycle.

If you're worried about it... rinse your old sand (with saltwater of course) and mix half and half with new sand.

i have moved similarly to you and i used new sand. no mini-cycle. i new a guy who did the same, kept the old sand- and nitrates went through the roof! not sure if that was typical though, it was a deep sandbed that had been running for years. so i imagine it had a lot of crud built up in it. if i were you id save a half a bucket of the old sand (from top layer of your sand bed) and use new for the rest.

If you decide to rinse half the sandbed or more (I could'nt afford new sand when my nitrates started creepin up so I rinsed the entire sandbed) be sure to get a mixing paddle bit for the screw gun. It's much easier on the hands than agitating the sand by hand.

A sandbed can only take so much before it's full. If you have the chance to replace it then you should. Have you considered going without the sand?

Then it wouldnt feel....."oceany".

I am not one to say, but, i would figure a good rinsing with water should at minimum help out a lot as long as some freh water was ran through it at the end.
