moving tank question?

I am going to be moving my tank and was wondering what yall suggest on how to move the sand?

Moving across the room or across the country? How deep is the sand bed and how long has it been established?

moving it a couple of hours a way, probably 3/4 deep set up for about 2 years

I think you need to start over with mostly new sand -- just skim off and reuse the top 1" of the old bed to get the beneficial critters. If you dig too deep (or dump the entire depth in a bucket), you'll mess up the bacterial zones and be dumping sewage into a new tank's water column. If you insisted on keeping the bed, I know of no way to keep it in any productive shape unless you can move it all just like it sits in the tank now.
