Moving tank

Ok, I have finally decided to move my 125 from the living room down into the basement. I will be building a new, taller, stand for room underneath and adding an extention, making the stand an L. This way, I have room for buckets when I do water changes, more storage space and a work place to frag. It will be covered in tile.

I will be making a closed loop manifold to supplement the water flow. Calvin415 is going to help me drill the back of the tank for the clm. I plan on going with 3 returns and 2 inlets going into a Dart pump.

Question for youze guys/gals is, where should I drill the inlets at? the returns will be about 3" from the top of the tank (same level as my in tank returns).

Why drill for inlets at all? It seems you'd have more options to arrange/rearrange your return locations and numbers if you have the returns come over the top. You also reduce the risk of leaks and cracks.

Won't you have to cut into your hood if you bring them back over the top rather than drilling into the side of the tank?

A tank I drilled for a friend back home...it was just a 55 but same concept as what you're doing w/ yours...we had 3 returns along the top and used lock line so really in effect she had 6 returns and she had 2 inlets about 5" above where her sandbed was. It created a more circular motion of water flow in the tank and helped avoid deadspots behind the rocks.

So Paul, is it only going to be viewable on 2 sides instead of 4? Anyways, I think thats a great move on the CL BTW. I guess it doesnt matter where you drill the inlet, as long as you can access the intake screen to clean it up every once in a while.

I will open up the back of the canopy anyway, to let in more air and allow hot air out. I just think that drilling will make for a cleaner install. You are right, Dan about the chance or leakage though.

I started the stand today, pix to follow.

Can't wait to see the new stand Paul, let me know when you want to do the move and we'll do it! :) Todd and the gang that showed today learned today how easy it is to drill glass so a lot of us can help you when you're ready.

Sweet. You getting the whole set up or just a tank?

I ordered a 45mm cutting bit to drill the glass. Should give me 1" bulkheads.
