Moving to Tampa - Where?

i agree and disagree.

public schools in pinellas have their pros and cons. Alot of them have magnet programs that you can enroll your kids in. Otherwise, they will be zoned to the nearest school.

I went to Rio Vista Elementary, St. Pete but its gone now.

For middle school i went to Bay Point Middle school for their tech magnet but i switched to Riveria middle (zoned school) because of the distance.

Riveria wasn't that ghetto but the classes were a joke compared to Bay point

I graduated from Boca Ciega's medical magnet program and i enjoyed it. The "traditional" side of the school was super ghetto, but the medical magnet section was really nice. students in the program had seperate teachers and had to take additional medical based classes in order to graduate from the program. i know other schools offered different programs like criminology, technology, and automotive

I've lived in st pete for all my life and i graduated highschool about a decade ago. so my experience is somewhat recent.

If you are concerned with your little one's education, i'd recommend a magnet program or a private school.

But it's florida and i believe our education is ranked among the lowest in the country. and one of the worst in comparison to population

this is very true. I made my statement based on my experience as a student. I was enrolled in countryside's traditional program. around 85% of the students came in stoned and would make and light bongs during class. I cared about my education and am now in a private school in St. Pete and am extremely happy. I am unfamiliar with the medical magnet at Boca Ciega but the one at Palm Harbor is lousy.

There are some areas of St. Pete that are just plain awesome. And........some not so awesome. I think that applies to ALL cities. Just North Tampa has the newer homes all over. Cookie cutter communities that I'm not a fan of.

Cookie cutter homes and alot if deed restricted areas where you can't even paint your house without getting the color approved.or the HOAs that place liens on your house because your yard isn't mowed or something stupid like that.that's what you get I'm westchase and those areas.

We don't even pull permits out here in the boonies. ;)

There are your pros and cons in any area... You just have to do the research on the city and the schools... We live in Pasco and my kids go to a grade A elementary school and I love it so much that we moved a mile away and the school zoned for the area we moved to is 3 houses down and I still drive them to their old school lol... The teachers are good about keeping me informed on how the kids are doing and always do meetings with me if they see anything that needs work on... Just know that no matter where you move you have a great reefing community on here and everyone is always willing to help if you have any questions or need anything... Good luck on your journey!!!

I live in one of those neighborhoods. I live across the street from an old lady who has nothing better to do than tattle on us for the most minor offenses. I had to park my car on the street for a couple days because my garage door was broken and we got a nastygram from the HOA not long after. Also if your trashcan isn't perfectly flush with your house or hidden from streetview you can get chewed out. The good thing though, is the neighborhood always looks nice. :\

Westchase is by far the nicest area around! 20 minutes to to downtown, 20 minutes to the beach!

You want to live in a nice neighborhood where people take care of their homes and respect others homes then you can deal with an HOA. If not, then you have pink houses and cars on blocks in the front yard.

Well, I finally made the move - not where I was anticipating though. I got a job in Lakeland and just moved to a rental in Mulberry. Are any of you guys this far out from Tampa? I look forward to meeting people once I finally get settled in.

Wow, Mulberry. That's pretty far out there.

Love the new "Location: in a VAN, down by the RIVER!" :lmao:

Carrollwood area seems to be a good choice for me. Moved to Tampa from Missouri about a year and a half ago. First year lived in an area closer to the center of Tampa but moved into a house in Carrollwood/Northdale and love it. Affordable, quiet, and pretty calm area. Some good schools close by too.

I am in the westchase area and I like it here, but I wouldn't want to commute to Lakeland on a daily basis. I am sure that when you set up another tank you will drive by me on the way to faois or coral corral though. Good luck with the new job!

Hey Dyraxe, you following me during business hours?? I have aquarium clients in every one of the places you mentioned above
And yes I know that's a lot of driving. Already put over 11,000 miles on the new truck since buying it in April.

I cant believe no one has mentioned Sulfur Springs. One of the oldest areas of tampa, it has a rich history with the sulfur pools bringing health tourists in since the 1890's. It is also the sight o the country's first mall. it was mainly settled by snowbirds, so most houses are the shotgun style, meaning you could shoot a gun from the back porch and out the front door. This facilitates a cooling breeze. Now many people that pass by wonder what the big white tower is. Is it a lookout? is it a silo? nope, just a simple concrete water tower. again, one of the first in the country.
