Moving to the Bay Area - Need Moving Advice

Hi Guys,

I will be moving to the bay area at the end of the month and need advice on how to take my 40g tank with me. My company is hiring a professional moving company to move my things, so I wont have the benefit of hauling my livestock and tank in the same trip.

So here is what I'm thinking

Option A

Pack up my livestock when the movers move the tank. They will probably have to stay in bins for 24-48 hrs before they can get back into the tank.

Option B

Find a reef friend here willing to hold my livestock for a few days and overnight ship it to my new location once my tank is set-up again.

Option C

Try to make a reef friend up there who wouldn't mind fish sitting. I'll be going up there prior to my move and could drive my corals and fish there within 8 hours.

Thanks for your help in advance. Please post any suggestions I didn't think of, it would be much appreciated.

I thinks that Option B is your best bet. Unless you do find someone that live next door to where you are moving to then Option C would work and I hope you dont have expensive coral and then have some kind of argument about it getting lost on his tank lol.

Agree with Danny. C would definatley be the best, and much easier on the fish.

any one will work. I would try to avoid shipping them if possable. You will have better luck moving them yourself. I am sure if you post in the Bay area thread some one would probably offer to hold them.

I would ship everything else (furniture, etc) with the movers and dedicate your car/truck to your livestock (and tank +equipment if you have the room). All valuables should be with you and within your control at all times. I would buy battery operated airpumps too. In heavy traffic, it should take you 8-10 hours max.. still better than 24-48 hours in a styrofoam box.

Matt, I would go with option A but keep as much equipment as possible with you pieces that you absolutely have to have to keep your fish and corals alive. I am not sure if I would trust movers with my tank just because if it gets broken it would be even longer that your livestock would be in bins. Also some of your expensive pieces of equipment I would keep with you like you chiller and lighting.

I will try option C, but if all else fails I think Option A is good too.

If I brought the livestock up with me in bins, do you think they would be ok for 48 hours in the same water & without thier normal light? I figure I would have to seperate all of the fish & corals into seperate tupperware containers to minimize any losses.

I wish D was an option (and maybe a tank upgrade). My wife wouldn't be very happy with me blowing money twice on the tank.

I like this one better than my option D. What self respecting reefer lets the esposa(wife) get in the way! Be tough!

Lol, not an option.

She is leaving her job so that I can take a lateral move to a different position in my company (thus requiring us to move). I am at the esposas mercy.
