mpcart reboot

Rebooting my 240g and I'll need some advice/help from the group since my memory is a little foggy. Going to keep with SPS and my old school MH setup if possible.

Rock/sand has been in 1.030+ unheated circulating water for ~18 months. Thinking I need to just drain the whole thing, new water, replace the sand, and use the same rock with a little bit of fresh live rock to kick start things. Problem last time was with water quality - so I'll start with a new RODI.

Also have to clean out the sump and re-plumb to move the main pump to a quieter part of the room.

Hope to get back in the SLASH groove -

I’d ditch the sand and keep the live rock in warm circulating saltwater and check your nitrate/phosphate. Water change and run some carbon a few times to clean it up a bit. Glad to see you back!

I am excited for this! Let me know if I can help. I travel across the boarder often.

I would clean the sand because I [hate spending money] enjoy wasting a lot of time/water not doing things like cooking or vacuuming my car. Then I would acid wash the old rock to get rid of all the old built up nutrients. I would then circulate saltwater through it while running carbon and phosphate remover. After all that I would steal a rock and a cup of sand from someones tank that I trusted to seed again.

The only reason I see to get rid of this and would be if you wanted a different color or grain size other than that just wash it out and reuse it. No such thing as new sand anyway anyting we use has been used in the ocean for thousands and thousands of years. I washed out enough for 6' 160 gallon to have a 3-inch sandbed the other day took me about 45 minutes. Poured into a Rubbermaid tub about 1/3 full then take a garden hose and just start stuffing it down into the sand and then pour off the water do that a few times until the water runs clear in the sand that I rinsed had been used in a deep sand bed old-school plenum reef tank for over 10 years probably don't get much dirtier than that lol.

I think you should try bare bottom this time around. Nice to see ya getting back into it!
