My friend told me there was a 3 inche orange mantis at a store nearby for 16$. I'm going to get my water tested at the LFS and make sure evrything is good. If this one dies who knows whats gonna go in that tank. I'll let you know how my water quality is and if I get the mantis afterall :P

I got my results for my 20g....... They were bad. i bought over 90$ worth of supplies to fix the water in both my tanks!! im going to wait a week or two til I get the mantis.

Which Mantis shirmps are Orange? I know Lysiosquilla Mapia and heard Pseudosquilla Ciliata can be, any others?? Thanks

What exactly was wrong with your water? How long has the tank been set up and what do you you have in the tank? (LR, sand, filtration, water flow, light, inhabitants)? I'm curious because if the tank is cycling then poor water quality is normal and the tank just needs to complete it's cycle. If the tank is cycled and you are having problems with nitrates and/or ammonia then you need to take a look at what is happening in the tank that is causing it. Same thing with calcium and alkalinity. These are usually problems that can be fixed with waterchanges and eliminating the cause of the problem.

The solution to pollution is dilution.

The most common solid orange stomatopod is Pseudosquilla ciliata. Pictures of this morph have been posted on this forum. They are really pure orange.

L. mapia has an orange head, but the rest of the body is a more typical Lysiosquillid pattern with transverse bands.

Neogonodactylus wennerae females are sometimes referred to as "orange", but this is really a rust color with some pattern. I would not consider them orange.

Gonodactylaceus often have female morphs that are orangish - although the only one that I consider true orange are G. graphurus and G. glabrous (I'll try to find a picture to attach.)

I have also seen other gonodactylids that have rare orange female morphs. The most frequently encountered is Neogonodactylus bahiahondensis from the Pacific coast of Central America.

Echinosquilla is usually red with white spots, but I have seen orangish individuals.

Odontodactylus havanensis and O. brevirostris are also orangish, but mottled with brown..

The alkalinity weas extremly high. they guy said it went off the meter. The meter stops at 17.5, so he marked it with 17.5+.my salt was a little low, abut 1.021. And he gave me a bunch of stuff to add to the tank and when to do it. I'm going to bring in samples again next weekend and ask if the water is ready for fish. right now I have a few snails, and some emerald crabs in there. I'm pretty sure there r some swimmer crabs lurking about too.

Roy, I'm hoping it's a Pseudosquilla, What size tank is about right for one? I was going to put it in my 20g with a pistol shrimp. Then my 6g, where my pistol shrimp is now, could ahve some small clwons gobies and stuff like that.

Sounds to me like your LFS scammed you dude. Ive never heard of alk off the chart before. Even if it was high there are buffers that would not cost you more than 20$. Are you using table salt? If I were you I would find new place to shop.

Really. The only thing you could have spent $90 on that would have been worth it is 3 buckets of Instant Ocean salt. Which would net you 600 gallons of water changes, or around 4 lifetimes on your 20g.

This is going to be a mantis tank, right? Why would you be measuring alkalinity? If the water isn't burning your skin off, the alk is fine. Anyway, here are the measurements you should care about:

SALINITY - stay around 1.025, but anywhere from 1.023 to 1.026 is ok
TEMP - 78-80 degrees
AMMONIA - zero!
NITRITE - zero!
NITRATE - I'd not bother to ever check this on a mantis tank. Do a 5g water change once a month and you'll be fine

That's it. No additives, no chemicals, they're BS. Keep it nice and simple.

HTH.

S !

Yeah, But the chemicals are mostly for my 72g Reef. :) 14 alk. is a little high for a reef tank. well im going back this weekend to get everything ckecked out again and hopefully get the mantis. I'm going there today so I can tell you if it's spearer or not.

Well I didnt really have anything for my reef tank to begin with: iodine, iron, and everything else. I bought all that. I am sserching up other places but they r really far away, and until I get my car, my mom probably won't take me.

It's not jus the alk that was off, I didn't have enough "nutrients" for my fish. I have many unexplained deaths. 3 chromis', dead emerald crabs. they also gave me some stuff to help prevent diseases.

Ok, I saw it today and know for a fact its a Yellow Spearer. They said they have no clue what it is though. I'm going to buy it hopefully on Sunday. Will get pics up if I'm there soon enough before someone else buy's him.

I'm thinking it's a pseudosquilla. c. because of the Photograph by Chris Lukhaup of CrayFish World. The eyes are the exact same coloration, and he is all yellow :)

Would a 6g. be fine for a P.C.? I'm thinking of using my 20g for other uses. and because my 6g is on my desk and I'm here alot :)

Wait, could too high of temp kill a mantis shrimp? i just checked and the temp was set to 84!!!!!!!! Could this be a reason of death?

ok, so 84 isnt high at all... I just really wanna find out why my mantis' keep dying. I went to get the pseudosquilla today at the store and guess what. It was gone. -.- Well, just have to wait for another to come in.
