I have an opportunity to buy this coral, and this will be my first non-photosynthetic coral.

mulgorg1.jpg

The guy that I'm buying it from is going to provide me with Phyto and Cyclopeeze to feed it, and he'll show me how to grow my own too.

He's had the coral for about 6 months, and it's growing and doing well in his tank.

Light flow, any type of light, feeding.

Are there any other tips that you can give me?

OH MY GOD!!!! THAT IS INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! I have never seen anything like that, it looks like one of those fake coral ornaments :D

Since it's non-photosynthetic, you should have it in lighting a little on the low side, with medium to high flow.
Phytoplankton and Cyclopeeze should be fine for it, if the guy you're getting it from is getting those results with that feeding.

thats a beautiful piece, good luck!

well you must be hot then.....lol

She is! :inlove:

Congrats on your new coral. That's some crazy coloration.

Does this guy run a non-photo tank or is it mixed? Are you planning to add this to an existing reef tank or are you setting up a non-photo tank?

The reason I ask is because I tend to think the biggest difficulty with a non-photo gorgonian like that would be invasive algae. This would be a potential problem in a mixed tank where you'd have light that would allow for such algae growth. In a dedicated non-photo tank, you can keep the light low enough so that algae growth isn't a concern.

As far as feeding goes, the gorgonian will eat the cyclops but probably not the phyto. You could also try feeding it rotifeast, baby brine shrimp, and Nutramar prawn ova.

For flow, you're probably going to need to experiment with different placement to see what flow it likes best. It will react to good flow with better polyp extension.

It's pretty encouraging that he got it to grow. Either it's a pretty easy non-photo gorg or he has a good system going.

I browsed the seller's site; he doesn't appear to offer any other gorgonians. Although he does offer multiple Dendrphyllia
and Sun Corals. It is unusual for a gorgonian to benefit from Phytoplankton, but perhaps he knows what he is doing.

However, is that a photosynthetic Eunicia gorgonian in the background?

Let us know how the specimen looks upon arrival and how it fares afterwards (on the Phytoplankton diet).

I've placed it in my existing reef tank.

The only time that I've had a problem with algea is when I first set the tank up. The normal algea that everyone gets with a new system.

I havne't had a problem with algea since...But i'll definatly keep an eye out for it, just in case.

Thanks, I'll try some of those instead of the phyto.

It's in a high flow area at the moment, and it seems to like it there, so I don't think I'll be moving it anytime soon.

I took a picture of my tank with me, and showed him where i wanted to place the coral, and showed him where the hiden powerheads were, and he agreed that the spot that I had chosen would be good for it. So far, i think I've picked out a good spot.

He does have a great system going. His main display is plummed in with his two HUGE frag tanks. In total, I think his system is around 1100 gallons, plus a few other racks of smaller tanks for cleaners, and starfish and such....

Subscribing to the thread to see where this goes. Try to document everything you do now that it's in your tank. It will be interesting to see how this will grow!

Good luck!

Wow,that's one great looking piece.Do you know where in TO,he got the piece from?
Thx I'm also from TO and never saw a piece like that before.I just started a NPS and very interested in pieces like those.

Well, here it is, all settled in my tank. Sorry for the somewhat amature picture quality....

I took it off the plug, because I found a nice little hole to stick it in.
