multiple tangs

Hey -

Anyone had good/bad experience with multiple tangs? Ive seen naso and yellow in the same tank before.. but I dont recall seeing a naso and a powder blue..

Ive heard people say not to have more than 1 tang per tank.. but in a 90 gallon, you think a PB and a naso would be ok? (Considering buying one, but i figure if i want to have both might be wise idea to introduce both at the same time)

Unless you have a pretty big tank.. and you have the skills and time to pull one of the fish back out.. I would not attempt to add 2 tangs with the same body style... alot of people do it.. some successfully.... you might be able to find a mated pair.. of the same if you are lucky... I have a Powder blue and 2 Hep tangs in my 400 with very little problem as long as i keep them feed well they are fine.. but the powder blues are already a fish prone to getting sick when stressed.. if you are gonna try it .. that may not be the best choice... hope that helps

Ryan is correct... As you prob know there are different species of tangs..

Achilles Tang (Acanthurus achilles)
Powder Blue Tang (Acanthurus leucosternon)
Sohal Tang - Red Sea (Acanthurus sohal)

Blonde Naso Tang (Naso Lituratus)

Chevron Tang (Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis)
Kole Tang (Ctenochaetus strigosus)

Blue Hippo Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus)

Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum)
Sailfin Tang - Red Sea (Zebrasoma desjardinii)
Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma flavescens)

Above are a few diff tangs / species... If you tried to add say a Sailfin with a Powder Blue you may have a higher success rate then trying to add a Chevron and a Kole... Some fish (even same species) act total different in general as well as each fish have their own personality... The more space the easier it will be, alot of it is trial and error...

Since all 3 tangs listed are of different species it should be about the same on either config, again it would come down to the personality of the fish and space would only help the relationship or hinder it, depending on how much you are working with...

Currently I have a purp and a sailfin tang (did have a naso) as well.

IME, the dominant fish in my tank is a flame angel; not the tangs. If any fighting would start the flame would finish it. He is like the teacher in on the playground. BUT- adding shy tangs to my setup the flame killed 3 orange shoulder tangs by scaring them when they tried to feed.

In my 55 gal tang (now my 90), I had a purple tang and a tomini tang and they got along fine (both were ~3.5"). The purp recently died in the 90 gal tank after getting pinned in a high flow area. :( We found him too late.
 
I have a Blue Hippo, Sailfin and a Yellow Tang in my tank with no problems. They swim and eat together and they show no signs of aggression towards each other.
 
my tank is relatively non-aggressive up to this point..

copperband is a wus, mandarins and lawnmowers dont mess with anything, and my 2 chromis are happy little fish..

My only worry would be the female sebae, but it only seems to bother things that eat pellets... never had an appetite for Nori.. she picks on her man more than anything else..
 
If the tangs have the same shape or body style that can create a problem.. in my experience.. if you are going to pick tangs I would try and mix up the body shapes... but it is still the luck of the draw

i have a hippo and a yello tang together and they were fine when i bought them the hippo was with a purple tang 2 nasos and a powder i believe and was just fine....the yellow tang was in a fish only when i bought him and the hippo and yellow are buddies......i think if you get about the same size and put them in together with lights out it'll be okay
 
I bought two very small(1 inch) blue tangs and introduced them into my tank at the same time. they get along great butthen again they grew up together and they are one of the most timid tangs you can get.
 
I have a Blond Naso, Purple and a Pacific Mimic in a 225 reef. The Naso & Mimic went in together when they were 3-4 inches and the purple was added about 2 weeks after. The purple was picked on for a couple days, now they all graze the tank together. The Naso is the boss, the Purple and the Mimic will flash each other from time to time, without actually doing anything.The live rock is set up like a tall ridge, leaving plenty of open swimming room. i have a yellow and a brown together in a 90, i put them together fairly recently both about the same size and they are both approx 4 years in age (ive had them for 4 they were pretty young when bought) i knew what would happen when i put them together. So i watched them i introduced the yellow at night and fed then tank well that day, although there was a lot of action for the first few days aggression disappeared after the 3rd day, now everything is fine.......
 
I have these tangs no problems over four years.
1 powder blue tang
1 blond naso tang
1 hippo tang
1 yellow tang
3 purple tangs
 
Yea, I thought I was nuts, but I know a few people with a lot more in smaller tanks. :lol: I know Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m over stocked, no more fish for me until I get a bigger tank. I have had some of the tangs over seven years and they are all healthy and not aggressive toward each other. I canââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t wait to get a larger tank, Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m shooting for around 900 gallons.
