i have a strange question, is it possible or evaen a good idea to run a small 30g and have it share the sump and refugium with my 90 gal ?

depending on the size of the fuge it may reduce its effectiveness but in the end you are simply expanding the volume of your system as a whole which is a good idea. a sump is a place to put stuff such as mechanical filtration as well as add water volume to the system. as long as you have the space to run the proper filtration for your system your fine

i run all of my tanks as one large system

I say do it. I used to but now I just have 1 big tank. the new tank addition will probably go through the new tank syndrom just like a new tank. algea maybe some red slime. not pretty by any means but will pass in a few months

that sure is strang how its all one system yet opnly in the new tank you have cycle type algea blooms. i think it has something to do with all the new materials. sure looks odd though.

one downside is that any nasties that pop up will be in the total system. you will still need a separate qt tank.

It is usually the sand that goes through a cycle along with the surface area of the tank(glass). If you were to use the same sand and rock in the new tank from the old then the algae would be drastically reduced. IMO!
