Mummy Eyes & Red Watermelon chalice Placement

Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me where I should place these two chalices in my tank? I am getting VERY slow growth on them. I got them when they were the size of my nail and they only double their size in the past 1 1/2 years. Thank you.

I wouldn't worry about the light. Try feeding them a couple times a week, I feed mine three times a week and growth is great. Watermellons are usually slow growers.

Wouldnt worry about light?? I would! They are CORAL, and need light to grow!!! Maybe different intensities but I would worry more about flow and not so much on light. Too much flow and they shrink up and wont feed. I have mainly SPS and have a lot of flow in my tank to keep em happy but I have a ton of chalices in my tank doing really well and growing super fast, even watermelons. Some in the top 6" of my tank with HIGH light, just low flow and they do better than the chalices on the sand. My chalices grow the fastest in the top half of the tank ALL with high light, they just need to be shielded from moderate to high flow to survive well. I spot feed corals maybe once a week, if that. Good luck with your chalice growth.

What mummy eye do you have? I like to keep all of my chalice in the sand bed and direct feed them everyother night. I put the high light chalices under the middle of the MH and the rest on the outside.

I have the OG mummy eye, Emerald mummy eye, Bubblegum Monster, Pumpkin Patch, and Vivid's Original Encino aka "Pink Boobies" all in the top half of my tank all with high light, low flow, grown fast. Most chalices owners keep them in the sand because it is usually the area in most people's tanks that has the least flow and not too many coral. Not because they don't like light! Try it!

My ME's turn kind of orangy/yellow in bright light, so I keep them shaded.

I would try feeding them before you change their lighting intensity. I have the emerald mummy eye about as low in the light as I can and its popping out eyes like crazy. But I feed it regularly. If they are full they wont eat, but I've never seen one get up and move to a shady spot.

I got the original mummy eye. I like them on the sand bed but if I have to move them up for more growth then I will try to find spots for them.

I have mostly SPS in my tank so flow is high. Even certain part of the sand bed has high flow. I will try to move them to low flow sand bed area and try spot feeding for couple of week and see if that'll help. I think my chalice problem are flow too high and water too clean... Thank you guys for all the advice!

Too clean? That's what you want. You just need a lot of natural phyto growth to not feed as much. My fuge supplies all my corals with food and my tank is super clean and they all still thrive. Try adding a few different live phytoplankton to your tank and/or refugium.

I personally have found that Mummy Eye sp. like lower light to get the best coloration but Watermelons do rather well in higher lighting, I've personally have moved up a Rasta, Tyree Pink, South Beach and they all inflate like crazy and show better overall health happiness
