Mushroom Leather coral split?

I know this is the anenome site but just wondered if these corals split? They must because mine has split right down the middle to make two seperate column all the way to about an inch above the rock it's attached to. Will it split completely or do I need to help it buy cutting it in two to the base.

I have a different type of leather coral and it definitely buds little branches off that grow to full length.
