Mushroom question

I have what will be a very basic question for this forum, sorry! I just set up my first salt tank a week ago. It is a 30 gallon cube that was freshwater previously and has a Penguin Bio-Wheel 170 running on it. I have added a Koralia 2 powerhead and the tank has about 15 lbs of live rock plus another 10 lbs of base rock in it. Also a 20lb bag of live sand. I upgraded to a Nova Extreme SLR T-5 30 watt light fixture.

Here's the mushroom question. I never intended to get anything like a mushroom this soon, but I got a gorgeous 5 lb + piece of live rock with about 8 mushrooms on it - just basic blue actinodiscus from what I can tell. I read one article on them that says not to use any mechanical filtration. Do you all agree with that? Should I shut down the Pengiun filter? There are no fish in the tank yet, but it seems weird to think of having no filter once I get them. I am planning a very light fish load and was hoping to not have to have a protein skimmer.

So, can these mushrooms do okay in a tank with this filter, or is that a big no-no?

Thank you!

lol i dont no where you heard that. Its not gunna make a difference on them if you do or dont. i wont recommend keeping it though

The mechanical filtration in itself is not the problem. The problem always arises when the filter media itself is not cleaned regularly. If you will pull the filter media out about once a week and clean it thoughly, it will keep from becoming a nitrate trap and you will be fine.

Thank you - I can't remember where I read it... some online article that had a list of things to do or not do to keep mushrooms. Someone else also said the filter is fine, but rinse the media weekly, so that is what I'll do!

What is the process to clean the filter media.?

Just pull the filter media out once a week when you do your weekly water change, flush it out really good in the water you were removing from the tank, use a clean toothbrush on it if you have to and then give it a quick rinse in some more of the water you are removing from the tank or some of your replacement water,

If you do that each week as you do your weekly water changes you will be in good shape.

That is what I have been doing. Thanks I am glad I have been doing the right thing. You hear of so many different ways to do things. Thanks again!
