Mushroom Squirted Fluid in my Eye

So I was doing a WC, general cleaning and rescaping my tank this morning. One of the rocks that I pulled out had a few mushrooms on it that I was wanting to remove. So Like I have done many times before, I pull the rock and scrape the mushroom from the rock. Most times when I start scraping, they just deflate and the fluid runs out. This time though, it popped and the fluid splashed me in my face and one drop went right in my eye. At first I didn't think much about it and kept working. About a minute later, my eye started to burn, and then the splashes on my face started to burn. I ran to the bathroom and washed my face and hands, pulled my contact and flushed my eye with contact solution. The burning went away on my face almost immediately after washing and in about 5 min my eye stopped burning also. But since then my eye is bloodshot, itches and is sensitive to sunlight.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them? If so, did you seek medical attention or did it heal up on its own?

That happened to one of my friends, he went to the hospital and received medical attention right away. If not for the antibiotics he received he may have suffered damage to his eye. Get it looked at!!!

Safety glasses or face shield working with zoa's, mushrooms and Pal's. They can cause serious eye damage.

Not to say you shouldn't get it checked since your eye still burns, but I've had that happen a few times with no issues. It's basically just saltwater, chances are pretty good that it burned because saltwater burns when it gets in your eyes...

Sorry it took me so long getting back and thank you all for the advice and replies. I did get it checked out and they flushed it and put some, what I believe was a form of antibacterial drops in it.
Anyway, by the next morning it felt much better but even now, 3 days later, my eye is still a bit red. And yes, safety glasses are now a piece of aquarium equipment from now on.

Great plan getting it checked out, good to hear you're ok!

Sounds like you got away with it lightly, I have seen two people with the redness but also massive swelling of the face after a squirt in the eye. Both ended in the emergency department of the hospital.

I coped a huge squirt in the face last week, wearing glasses but yes it started burning the skin by the time it took to get to a fresh water flush no more than one minute. I was good once washed it off, very important to wear glasses.
