mushrooms overtaking tank

mushrooms are overtaking everything in my tank. I have taken out big rocks one at atime and scraped them off let them sit in the dark for 2-3 weeks in salt water then put them back in the tank and they are starting to reappear in a week or so.They are growing on the sides of my clams

You should see if you could trade them for pieces of live rock the same size. I am sure there is someone that would take them off your hands.

they are all big rocks 15 - 30 lbs. and there are no LFS inthe baltimore area anymore

Check the reef clubs at the bottom of the forum. There might be some people in your area that would take them off you. Normally if there is still a little piece of the foot there it will grow back.

DC area has a very active and excellent club full of great people that trade a lot.

WAMAS, Washington DC Area Marine Aquarist Society, it's a .org on the web.

I think they have a quarterly meeting coming up soon.

I joined, and through contacts there I was able to sell off my entire livestock collection when I moved from DC to Phoenix. Everyone I met were very nice, and honest.

Oh, and open a fish store!

how do I frag them
they seem to gow around the smaller pieces of rock?

Get a bunch of Rubble, put them at the bottom of a bucked, make sure the bottom is covered, Then just put your scrapings in there. They will eventually attach.

The problem you're running into with them growing back is that you aren't getting the whole base. You'll have to chip away the rock to get it, they get really good and in there.

When I run into situations like these :) I just bring the whole rock to a LFS -- sell them the rock and walk out with a similar shape and sized rock, along with a bunch of green in my pocket

Maybe you can give us your tank parameters to see if we have the luck you do in growing shrooms (pH, Temp, Alk, CA, Lighting, etc).

I have a similar issue, the shrooms pop up wherever they want. The tank is 2 months old and even a cave under the dead rock has a shroom growing from it. It wouldn't be so bad if they grew in different colours. Mine are brown with green. Its not bad at the moment due to how new the tank is, but I'll be watching them...
