My 10 gallon xenia forest

Ok so, I am seeing a hint of green agian. This is only one day after a 100% water change. Sooo, I am going to order a 1 micron filter sock and/or see if I can find a local reefer with rotifers.

Ok, so I think the clam is dying. It looked terrible ever since the water change, and today it seems to have stopped responding to shadows. ...Damn. Probably changed the temperature too fast on it and such.

I get rotifers tuesday.

This is a very cool thread! I've had over 20 tanks in my life, but my favorite was a 10 gallon I had in my dorm at UC Santa Cruz. Aqua Clear 30, Skilter 250 (LOL, piece o' crap) and early PC's.

Sometimes these low budget experiments are more fun that starfrire 180's. Carry on!

I don't think the people in this thread who questioned the addition of a clam are "haters". Criticism isn't necessarily a personal attack; usually it's an attempt by someone who either knows more or has suffered from making similar mistakes to prevent someone else from doing the same.

I hope your tank recovers. This is an interesting thread, and the original setup was unique and beautiful. I hope you'll be willing to hear other people out, even if they question your decisions. Remember that not everyone who offers constructive criticism is doing it to be mean-spirited. ;) Good luck.

I have seen tanks lit strictly by sunlight filled with SPS, and thrived. But keep in mind that direct sunlight is close to the eqiuvelent of 1200w of halides. So it is very possible to light a tank that way, you just need to make sure there are no walls or objects to block the light.

A UV sterilizer is probably about the best way to get rid of green water, should do the trick in about a day or two.

Also expensive and there aren't really any UVs made for nanos.

Interesting note, since the addition of rotifers, I have had brown skimmate. Also, I am keeping a separate .5 liter culture of them outside of tank fed with tank water, and the culture is doing great, so that gives me hope. Water goes clear every 24 hours and I dump 1/2 of the culture into the tank to be replaced with fresh tank water.

I also just hatched a bunch of brine shrimp in my 1 gallon phytoplankton culture, so I am going to let those grow out then either feed them to my clown, or try to use them to clean the water.

Ok, so things are getting worse again.

Ok, these two cultures are quite odd. The rotifers on the left work great. But the brine on the right, seem to have all died shortly after hatching and the phytoplankton has become thick dark green since then.
