My 10 gallon xenia forest

Recovery photo number 1. There is a lot of extra rock in there. I will get that out once the xenia stop rotting.

Welp, I moved the tank to the dorm and Woo... phytoplankton bloom...

I think I am going to buy a tridacna clam or maybe just brine shrimp this weekend to help out.

I would pass on the clam in your type of setup. I see the way you're thinking, but probably not the best idea.

I was just about to comment on how nice your tank is. It's great to see such a different, species specific system. Sometimes the simplest setups can look the most natural.

Sorry to hear about your loss though...you'll bounce back soon....good luck~!

Well, in the dorm I have direct sunlight, and clams can be easily kept under direct sunlight even without the supplemental 5.2 watts per gallon I have on there.

But I don't know, they are rather expensive so I might try out just brine shrimp, rotifers, or some such thing. For the record, anyone who said that a skimmer takes out live photoplankton, I am afraid they were poorly mistaken.

Also, thankyou for the complement.

You should throw a clownfish in there, they'd love it! I have a friend who has two clowns and they hosted to his xenia.

They have a clown in there already. Didn't ya see it? ;)

I looove the stalks off xenia!

Whoa, i should have read the entire thread before posting. I can't believe that happened to your xenia!!!

Luckily for you it was only Xenia you lost. They're easy enough to get going again. 1 $8 frag and you're set to go.

I had the bad experience of a heater melting every coral in my tank... Sadly, these weren't the "just spend $8 and get a new one" kind of coral. However, I got refunded for my losses, so all is happy now. :)

Glad to see corals grow so well under this type of lighting, as I have the same types of lights over my currently cycling frag set up. Can't wait to put some xenia in and watch them explode. :D

Well, those are giant bali xenia, so they cost a little more, and grow a bit slower. But I didn't loose all of them, they are starting to grow back from the parts that didn't melt.

which one of these did you get

thanks
I got "APC SMART UPS 1500" 's but you don't have to get the Smart UPS's. I just have and insane network of UPS's on everything in my house and those give me remote control and monitoring capabilites. You can just use a standard 1000 or 1500 VA unit to provide power for keeping powerheads running and a small filter unit and/or heater. If your just running powerheads, you can get several days running time. If you have a heater and/or filters/pumps then probably several hours running time.

Thanks for all the condolences. The brine eggs are hatching well, and there are a ton of bbs swimming around. Hopefully they will survive long enough to eat the phyto. Fingers crossed.

So, all the brine shrimp went missing shortly after hatching. I hatched a LOT of eggs, so that is actually surprising, but whatever. I also tried turning the lights out for two days, but the xenia got very unhappy so the lights are back on and the water is greener than ever. It looks like I will either need a clam, a low micron filter sock, or something else. I will look around next time I get home...

Don't you just love the types of corals that grow back after you kill them? :D

Purchased a maxima today.
