My 125G build

Abe, that's a good pic. Don't be so hard on yourself... it's not a photo contest anyway :)
Thanks Jake

OK lots of questions for you... If I understand correctly your overflow box is 9" deep top to bottom? Are all your drains through the bottom of the box? If Josh goes less than 30" wide like his sketch shows will he still have room for the plumbing that you have? Is your return in the box too?
I just read this post and ya you got it right. I think this is a better design. I had mine built as a peninsula tank originally. Plans change and I loved the tank so much I just went with it.
I don't want to give to much away I'm waiting to start a thread when I have something I'm proud of. I'm not there yet.

I really want to try and do that on a tank! More than you even know, I tryed to get eros (steve) to do his this way but it was a no go. Have you thought about Making the tank 4" wider and keeping everything inside by having a false wall like a AIO but drill the bottom then you have the best of all worlds. I would do 3 drains and your return up from the overflow box.
As for teeth you need them for sure. My gobie would go overflow surfing a couple times a week. I had a snail plug the syphon line. Lots of bad can and will happen well atleast it did for me.

Yeah Jacob brought up the idea of the false wall, I'm just really limited on space so I can't have the tank any bigger then 30x30.

I think I have decided to go with something similar to the pic I just posted above. External overflow with two holes drilled for the returns. It's going to be rimless so I don't want to have to run the return over the back of the tank.

Now I just need to figure out how deep to notch out the back glass for the weir. Anyone have a suggestion?

My tank the water line is 1" down and it should be atleast 1.5" or 2". I can not clean the glass with out a towel because of the splashing and i have to watch the power heads because they will send water over board in a heart beat.

Abe suggested the idea of notching the glass after my tank was built. I really liked the idea and made some calls to a few glass shops to get estimates on it. None would even attempt it. Your best bet would be to try to get the manufacturer to either notch the glass for you (if they will) or do what Abe did and have the rear panel cut a few inches shorter and do a true coast to coast. Good luck.

Cool, thanks guys. I have contacted the builder to see if they can notch the back panel, I will have them do it about 2" down, then I can create my own acrylic weir to put in and go from there.

OK guys, a few updates. I talked the wife into getting a bigger tank, I decided on going with 48x30x20. Still going rimless, the only question now is the internal vs external overflow. The price difference between the two is close to $500! External would be nice, but shish not that nice! So as of now it looks like I'm going to go with internal.

Not ideal, but I'm just happy I get to go bigger!:)

Who did you decide to go with? I like the dimensions also.

Right now I'm leaning towards LeeMar. Still waiting to hear back from Miracles for a quote though.

Back to the internal vs external, you really can find anything if you look hard enough. Here is where they made an external overflow with an internal weir, lol. In theory it looks pretty good! You only have to drill the tank, the internal weir is only about 1" wide so it would hardly be noticeable. My brain is like this right now:fun5:

Just curious what you would plan on doing with the return on that setup? I'm poaching your ideas lol

I love the design, I just have only seen mockups of it, haven't actually seen anyone do it yet.

For returns, I would probably move the holes to the middle of the tank, make the weir about 5" shorter then put the returns on either side of it.

Ok guys, quick question. Black or clear silicone? Seems black would kinda defeat the purpose of going with rimless, drawing your eye to the seams.

Ok I have decided on black!

Last question before I order the tank, which is being built by Keith in Sac! I'm getting the external overflow, I'm glad he decided to get back into building:)

Anyway, here is the question. For the returns, drill the back panel on either side for my returns, or have the returns come up through the overflow box and go over the top of the tank with loc line?

Having them in the tank would be nice, but then I would have to deal with a check valve etc to make sure the tank didn't drain down to their level in a no power situation.

Having them in the overflow box would be nice and very easy, but then I am dealing with locline coming over the rim of the tank.

Really sucks trying to make this decision without being able to see the two in person!

Unfortunately, Leemar will not make an external overflow. I tried and got shot down.

DOH, I should have read all the posts. I hear Keith does good work! I drilled the right corner, rear panel for a 3/4" bulkhead and it looks great. It looks much cleaner than having a U tube go over the rimless glass. If you have the return hole just under the overflow teeth and have a large sump, you really don't have to worry about flooding, imo. I've tested my sump and the location of the return so when the power goes out, the sump can handle the additional water from the tank until the siphon breaks naturally. Good luck!
