My 14" Derasa Spawned got pics

another.........I have a 750gallon tank and this thing clouded up the whole tank. The skimmer went crazy as well.

The clam spawned after I moved it about a foot from it's original position. It was in that position for about a year without being touched and it seems that it stressed out about 30minutes after I moved it and spawned. Sad thing is that it took me 10 minutes before I realized that he was not just settling into his new spot:(

I ran to get the camera at that point and started to take pics from above and infront of the tank. Pretty amazing stuff I think........I never thought I'd ever see a clam spawn:D The clam spawned for about an hour (must have taken his Viagra:D ) The skimmer went crazy and I immediately went to change the carbon. As I mentioned I have a 750 gallon and this clam clouded up the tank BIG TIME! I can only imagine if this had happened in a smaller system. My concern of course is the small population of acros that I have in the tank. As of this morning though they seem to be fine.

If anyone would like a larger file size pic of this just email me a jeffhaddock@comcast.net and I will send a better quality pic.

In case anyone wants to know:

This is a Derasa clam that has been in captivity for all of 8yrs.
I measured it about a month ago and is just a smidge under 14"
I would say it weighs about 12lbs estimate.

It never has done this before but, is a very active clam in the tank. If you stand behind the tank you have a good chance of getting wet. It has shot water 3ft. above the tank and that's with it about two inches below the surface.

I had the exact same thing happen with a squamosa I had owned for over 8 years. Moved the tank, it spawned and stunk up the water. I sure wish I had an ozonizer then.

The problem was my tank was only 55 gallons! The clam was 13 inches from end to end.

Hey DT's,

when it comes to spawning.....SIZE MATTERS!!!:D thank god I have a large volume of water to deal with this.

No kidding! (LOL)

I felt really bad for the other small clam that died as a result. What a terrible way to go....

Well after changing the carbon and the skimmer working great I didn't have any losses:)

The water is now crystal clear:D
