My 240 gallon reef cracked...I NEED HELP!!

Yes its called AtA...They are cheap and legit....Better than wholesale on a lot of stuff. I am probably gonna go with an acrylic from them for 800.. Kinda weary of glass now :)

I am not sure to be honest with you sparkss...I did not see any cracks on the onset...However after a couple weeks I saw what appeared to be a tiny one...On halloween that tiny went CRACK with a thunderous noise and the water began to trickle...I was told by a few people that large glass tanks that have not been moved in a long time are suceptible to problems with cracking or leaking...If you see any kind of crack I would think twice about using that tank...I will let you know when I check it if the stand was level..

this is actually what happened to my old 90G, it cracked on me after 8 months. I bought the tank used from someone who had it for couple years. probably during the move it stress one of the corner of the glass plus I didn't dead level the tank. since it's on carpet, I can't really level it perfectly. oh well...

Re: your new acrylic tank. I suspect that Interstate Plastics here in Sacramento could make your new 240g for about the same as the $800 from the company in LA. Certainly more convenient.

They did my oddly-shaped 150g with 1/2" thick acrylic throughout from my drawings and it came to $600+/-.

Out of level shouldn't make a tank crack like that because the differences in load are insignificant. Perhaps if the stand was warped, not flat in one local area then the sagging tank could likely crack. I suspect the crack came from the move and originated as a small crack.

When I've done set-ups I put about a half inch of freshwater in the new tank (on its stand) and check for level that way. Measure the water depth at each corner. It's more accurate than laser levels and even a carpenter's level will barely show a 1/8" out of level on a 4-6' long tank, but the tank with water will show that.

Last, I fill the tank with RO freshwater and keep checking it for level as it fills to make sure everything is settled (floor and stand) and still level (check the water level at the top of the tank). Then add the salt and off you go.

Thanks for the tip....with stand and canopy...Now I just have 8 hours of scrubbing and 4 more of plumbing and I am good to go! :)
