My 28g Nano Cube - CF Quad

I had a 12 gallon that I got for free years ago and never put into action. It was not up to par so I bought this.

No real improvements yet, but I'm going to try and go skimmer-less for now. At most 2 more fish and maybe a shrimp are going in to go with some coral.

Fish/Inhabitants
2 ocellaris clowns
1 sally light foot crab
CUC

20lbs of live sand and about 15lbs of live rock from the 12 gallon, regular fiji rock and then some new style eco friendly seeded live rock that has a cool purplish color to it. It's more porous but has some cool shapes to it. I tried to build some areas inside the rock they can swim in and out of.

I read the entire nano cube thread and mostly it seems people have had heat issues with the HQI version. I haven't really seen anyone post about the CF Quad with heat issues. My water was at 84.6 degrees the other day. I live in Texas, AC is always on at 75 degrees and there is no direct sunlight to the tank, though there is light in the kitchen from windows. Nothing added outside of stock right now. The lights were on for a long cycle 6am-8PM, but that's what I ran in my smaller tank before.

No money for a chiller right now. Should I be having this issue with this tank? I bought an extra fan and am going to put it in the canopy, and I can buy the azoo (or is there a better solution since I'm a year back still) if I need to, but would rather not have to have that conversation after spending the amount I already have to get this started.

I shortened my light cycle the last few days and flipped the fans the other way and that's done a bit better it seems. But dang are these fans loud. One of the pumps is significantly louder than the other as well.

Get a JBJ C-Breeze fan. Pointed directly at the water as it comes from the overflow will lower it several degrees. But be warned, using it will cause much more evaporation so an ATO will be in your very near future.

Edit:
How long is the light cycle now?

I had to keep my AC at 72 to keep the temps inline with my CF-Quad until I got a chiller. It's a great investment on these hot TX summers both as insurance against a cooked tank if your home AC goes out, and also because it's going to save you a ton of money on electricity this summer because you can crank up your house temp to 82 when you leave and not worry about the tank overheating.

As John said, the fan will work well also but will lead to the need for an ATO. So there really isn't a "free" option per-se.

Good to see another Houstonian on here :)

A chiller will have to happen but I need to wait a bit. Maybe for father's day!

Just saw your edit:
I was doing it 6a-8p
It's now 6-8a and 5-9p

I need to get some new pics up, but the tank is up and running well now. Nitrates are in between 0-5 and it's generally in great shape.

I finally got my free stand in and built it. Moved the tank to the dining room out of the kitchen for wife happiness. That is pretty important to keep this up.

Bought a DJ4 (though the 3rd outlet isn't working, need to call them), a Aqua-C Remora HOB (talked it to $40), a JBJ ATO (guy sold it to me new for 50 since he accidentally bought 2) and a 2LF Phosban 150. Running Phosban from them in it right now.

Added a Cardinalfish to the tank as well and got a few frags of coral that I need to mount. Hopefully I can take some pics tonight.

Pics please!! Want to see how this bad boy is coming along!

As promised, more pics. Some terrible ones but pics nonetheless. My DSLR isn't taking flash less pics right now for some reason.

Hey I've got a question. Were you able to get the remora in there with the return pump on that side? I had to take mine out to make it fit.
