Yah, I'm impressed. :)

What's the deal on these fans in the middle of the sump. I know that's a melev speciality but what's the purpose?

Alberto,
Please be more specific when you say "humidity=rust everywhere". Where would you find rust in South Florida due to huimidity? I am very curious as to your experience and reasoning. Are you suggesting that I not cool the tank with fans?

Live Rock Arrives!

Live Rock Arrives!

I went to pick up 140 pounds of live rock yesterday at Fort Lauderdale Intl. 90lbs. of Kaelini direct from Walt Smith and 50lbs. Marshall Island from Premium Aquatics. I also hand picked 50lbs. of Haitian lettuce rock from my LFS.

I really like the Kaelini from Walt Smith. Outstanding variety of pieces with great color and life. The box contained a few really large choice pieces. Very happy.

The rock from Premium Aquatics was not what I expected. I am not an expert in rock geography, but it looked to me like Tonga branch, not what I have seen as Marshall Island.

The LFS had a few really nice show pieces and I really like the shape of Haitian Rock. Not much in terms of life or color, but excellent shape and size.

You have a very nice setup!!! Keep up the grate work! When your power goes out well the water that drains back to the sump drain thou the auto drain?

You will love stacking with that Haitian Rock you got. I have all that rock in my 300g. It is so easy to work with.

Alien,
Thank you for the kind words. I have a lot to update soon. The plumbing is 99% done and we will be water testing the system this weekend. I will post more photos tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone for their support. This has been quite the ordeal!

Update As Promised! Almost Home!

Update As Promised! Almost Home!

After much debate and consternation, we have gone back to a closed loop setup with the Tunze's as additional circulation as needed.

The dark glass corner braces were removed and new holes were drilled in the bottom of the tank.

Wow - you've got nerves of steel. There is no way I'd set up a tank with closed loop bulkheads in the base of the tank. If anything goes wrong, your tank will be empty in no time.

Check valves would keep the water from draining in the returns (for a while, until something gets in there and obstructs them - like grains of sand), but you can't put a checkvalve on the drain side.

I do hope it works out for you, but when it comes to this option, I'm just a big scaredy-cat. I won't even use the closed loop bulkheads on the back of my tank because I feel they are too low and would drain my tank about 60% if a pump leaked or the plumbing failed.

Is that you standing in the tank?

Check valves won't do anything with the drain, just like melev said. It would passively push the pump in reverse until it was drained down to the drain height. So my vote, is forget the check valves and don't reduce the flow!
