My 75 gallon Reef... a newbie's progress.

Trying to figure out Photobucket, let's see if this works. Attached is my latest FTS, please note the abscense of fish --Ick wiped the tank out after introducine a school of chromis. There was one surviving Chromis that I gave to the LFS. I plan on leaving the tank fallow for 6 weeks before re-introducing fish again.

Recently I added some new corals and will likely find permanent spots for them once time permits.

I have redone some of the wiring in the sump including a DJ powerstrip. Also added is a Tunze Osmolator; though, I am using Arrowhead containers for my ATO until I finish building the 9 gallon plexi container. I plan on getting ready to dose Kalk via my ATO. Buy a reactor or add to container?

I would also like to add a couple phos/charcoal chambers in the next couple weeks. Ideas on which ones to get? Run with a seperte small pump?

In the sump I built semi-removable baffles using plexiglass cut at Lowes and marine weatherstripping. It helped a bit with the microbubbles.

I plan on adding a couple filter socks and getting rid of the polyfilter you now see in the sump. I've been running the filter occasionally when I think it needs to be done (really on a whim only).

I also may add an MP10 Vortech to the right side back wall in the future.

Other recent additions include a Tuxedo urchin and Blue Exotic LED's which give an awesome night affect, but useless for shimmer/"pop".

Recently I've been using a turkey baster with Reef Chilli --though, not sure if it helps or if I am even doing it correctly.

Maybe I will try some chopped up scallops/shrimp from the gricery store.

tank update...

tank update...

An update on my progress: A couple days ago I added a dual GFO/Carbon reactor from BRS. So far, so good --it seems to be a very good design. I am running it with a maxijet 1200. This addition has begun the sump redesign; though, I need to make it a bit cleaner looking over the next few weeks.
Still flirting with the idea of adding a fuge.

Here are a bunch of new frags that need to be mounted on the rocks. My pink birds nest on the middle rocks are really hurting and turning brown. Parameters are all in check; though, alk is running a bit low. I started dosing dosing kalk and have hopes on fixing this.

While the Ick gets purged from the system, the tank will remain fallow until the end of Feb.

Plans for the next couple weeks: change the bulb configuration. Mount frags. Clean sump bottom by sucking it up, filtering in sock, and returning the water to the sump. Add a bit more carbon to filter.

Sump with lots of hanging wires and lines.

Very nice ! A 75 gallon is a really nice size tank too . You can do alot with it. I cant wait to see it mature . Keep posting pics of your progress !

I have heard of sps browning out due to low ALK. Hope the reactor helps. Please continue to keep us up to date. The tank looks fabulous!!

my alk is low (around 8), I am hoping that since I started kalk it will rise slowly after a month or so.

thanks for the compliment; though, I am truly a "newbie", because I only THINK I know a lot. ha!

Reading RC has been huge for me. The collective knowledge and help here really is amazing.

I do suppose at somepoint I will have to change the title of the thread --I've now been at it for 4-5 months.

trying to decide on which power head supplement to add --currently running the mp40w and need additional flow on the right side of the tank. Add an mp10? or a small tunze at the top of the tank?

opinions?

Procrastinating cleaning my house...so a few FTS's

Procrastinating cleaning my house...so a few FTS's

Don't really want to finish cleaning my house today --so, I am spending some time on my addiction.....'er, I mean "hobby".

Since my last post: carbon and GFO dual reactor from BRS has been added. Several fish now added, a Mandarin Goby, a Midas Blenny (super cool fish), a Diamond Goby (and his mild sand storm that I hope will quiet down after a few months), and a Cherub Angel in QT. I plan on adding one or two more fish --we'll see.

My SPS are having some trouble...still trouble shooting it. There are also a dozen frags on the floor of the tank waiting to acclimate to the light. How long do you guys acclimate for?

Here are three current FTS...

I highly recommend QT'ing all fish. My first fish stocking got wiped out rapidly by Velvet. Now they all go to QT first. My new arrival today:
<a href="http://s774.photobucket.com/albums/yy22/david_gutkin/FTS%20of%20March%202010/?action=view&current=IMG_0317.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy22/david_gutkin/FTS%20of%20March%202010/IMG_0317.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

My current sump with plans to upgrade this month to include a refuge. Note the ATO with Kalk to the right. My Downdraft skimmer seems to possibly suck. I only get about half a container of very wet skimmate per week. I suspect this may be the problem with my SPS.
<a href="http://s774.photobucket.com/albums/yy22/david_gutkin/FTS%20of%20March%202010/?action=view&current=IMG_0316.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy22/david_gutkin/FTS%20of%20March%202010/IMG_0316.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

My current FTS with plans to place corals in permanent spots on next day off. SPS are struggling despite "perfect" parameters. Some re-aquascaping planned for next week as well.
