my attempt at creating Thielli

Well I figured I would start a log at my attempts at trying to create the Thielli clownfish. please understand this will be a slow thread as I must first pair up the Amphiprion sandaracinos with the Amphiprion ocellaris, this IMO will be the hardest part. I am hoping to get at least 2 pairs, 1 of the pairs I hope to have the sandaracinos be the female and the other pair the sandaracinos be the male. I am not sure if there will be a difference in the offspring either way but thats the plan.

so now for a couple crappy pics.
here are the 4 juvi sandaracinos I just received, sorry they are sill acclimating before going into QT. and they are fast little suckers.

I am gonna try and pair them with my offspring ocellaris from this batch

Is this even possible? To get them to have successful offspring? If so than it looks like i might be doing this to.. lol

Good luck

I have read that its possiable, but the difftent people that have reported it done never really doucumented anything. And judging that there still hasnt been many thilli clowns out there i am guessing either they wernt telling the truth or something went wrong and they had to stop.

If i can get them to pair up that will be a huge move forward though.

Thanks

Very interesting thread. I will have to watch the progress.

Thielli's have always been one of my fav. clowns along with the Leucokranos, but are hard to find. Then after you do find one my wife would kill me if I spent so much on 1 clown :p.

Honestly I never even new what a thiell's were until I saw another thread on here about it. How much do they go for?

I'm going to get a male skunk and pair it with a female oceallaris. As I have many of both so money is not really a factor lol..

Wait so if you breed a skunk and ocelallris then you would make quite a profit? Or would their only be like one thielli out of the whole batch?

not sure, that's what I am trying to find out. for all I know these 2 clowns won't even make the Thielli, it is just what is speculated. I have not yet seen any proven documents. only people claimed they have done it. and I went to the moon :D

Well you would think the offspring would look pretty cool haha. Oh and I went to the sun :lmao:

Is it thought that these things are cross-fertilization between nests on the reefs. Since their geographical ranges are almost identical, it can be assumed that this is the combo. However, it may take selective breeding to replicate the desired shape, color, and markings. I am excited to see someone with the resources do this! Good luck. Keep us posted regularly.

well of course keeping 4 skunks in a single QT didn't last long, I ended up having to move 1 of them to a different QT already as he was getting picked on very badly, luckly I cought it soon enough that he only had his tail fin nipped a bit but it should grow back.

On a good note the skunk was placed into a QT tank with a small ocy and so far they are getting along fine, swimming around together. how long that will last is anyone's guess though.

I had bee trying this but had a tank crash that took them all out. Had them all in a 75, 4 juvi skunks and 4 juvi ocy's plus a spawning pair of skunks. Started with just the juvi's for 3 months, they all hung out and I was prepared to separate them as needed. The spawning pair was not supposed to be in there, couldnt pass them up and needed to cycle a tank so I threw them in a breeder box that they jumped out of. They were playing nice with the others so I decided to just keep an eye on them and put in an egg crate divider for the juvi's to escape if needed. Tank crashed a month later so that ended my experiment.
If I do it again I plan to get a large pair of skunks and a small ocy male (or maybe reversed), dividing the tank with eggcrate so the extra male can escape. From my research the issue with creating a skunk ocy pair is they have different behaviors or "language" and cant understand each other. Also its been said that perhaps its a male of one species or the other suddenly swimming in and fertilizing the eggs during spawning, which is seen in some other species. So my hope with this type of set up would be that during a spawning event the extra male would rush in and take a shot at fertilizing the nest.
