my big clam

Ok here is my big derasa. It's getting bigger and is now the star of the tank as being the center piece. Has anyone had any problenms with this type of clam and what more then good water quality, and high lighting should this clam be provided with? I have had this clam now for a year.

The tank is a 75 gallon. 4' long.

they will feed on what ever you feed the tank, but when they are that size i belive you don't have to target feed them like you would do with the baby clams. good lighting should be enough.

i just have two maxima's. and i don't target feed anymore have had them for 3yrs now. they are under 150w 15K bulbs now they were under 10k bulbs.

Thx, when I got this clam he was on the brink of death under very poor lighting. I put him in my tank under the twin 25oW MH and two weeks later he bloomed to what he is now. I keep my tank well fed and I believe that is why I have so much algea, but my cleaner crew along with water changes help that out.

Good looking clam! Typically, Derasa don't need as much light as a Maxima or Crocea. More along the lines of a Squamosa. As far as feeding, once they get beyond the 3" stage, or so, they pretty much rely on the symbiotic algae in their tissue for food. This when they become mostly, if not completely photosynthetic. Of course every animal is different. But if you research your animal thoroughly you usually have good success. That being said, the only Derasa that I had, died within a couple days of purchase. I believe he may have going down hill already. His tankmate at the LFS is still kickin' though. I have 2 other clams in the same tank (a crocea and a maxima) and they doing wonderfully. But I think Derasa clams are beautiful clams and will probably have to purchase another one if I can find one with good color.
